  • No justice for Kelly Thomas

Two former Fullerton police officers were found not guilty Monday in the beating death of homeless man Kelly Thomas, reports CBS Los Angeles.

After two days of deliberation, a jury of eight women and four men acquitted former officers Manuel Ramos and Jay Cicinelli of all charges in connection with the death of the 37-year-old Thomas, who died on July 5, 2011, after being beaten by as many as six cops.

Anyone who watched the actual video of the beating and can acquit these cops has serious problems with reality. I was nauseated, and I am all for cops shooting suspects in the knees that flee.

A retrial would be unconstitutional unless something like corruption can be demonstrated.

If this had happened in, say, East LA, or Detroit, or Miami, I might have been much more sympathetic to the cops. But on balance, I'm going for 'provoked confrontation with career druggie they should have simply arrested.' It's disgusting display by someone probably out to practice his Tacticool Suspect Restraint Procedures(TM) and that will never, ever see usage in safe areas like Orange County, but not really enough to get criminal penalties to stick, though the fact that Ramos wasn't fired was disgraceful. However, this statement by the father in a previous article sent up serious red flags for me:

The prosecution has painted a "false image of Kelly Thomas being this sort of compliant, non-violent homeless person and that is belied by the other incidents," Ramos' attorney, John Barnett, said at a recent pre-trial hearing. He added outside court that there was no evidence of schizophrenia, but that Thomas "took meth and LSD since the 10th grade and ruined his cognitive abilities."

Thomas' father is angered by talk of drug abuse and points out his son didn't have anything in his system that night.

"It doesn't matter what my son did in his life, it just doesn't matter. It's what the officers did that night," he said. "That's what this trial's about."
I did not pour out thousands of imprecations against Trayvon Martin, Trayvon Martin's greedy and opportunistic family and friends, the black community in general, and the corrupt white and black elites who defend their dysfunction for their own benefit to go against my principles here. Yes, it did matter what your son did in his life, because just like Trayvon Martin, the drugs he took previously scarred his brain and made him see nothing wrong with petty criminal activity, and he was wandering around in public when he should have been under family supervision/institutional rehabilitation. (How did he afford them? Who paid for them?)

Granted, the government has failed miserably at the second one, and is actively hostile to allowing fatherly authority for the first, but even then, why are you appealing to them, and their laws, to assuage your conscience now? The current government cares about you little to none when it isn't actively demonizing you, and whether you escape its depredations through violent revolution or familial endurance, both require discipline, and the number of itinerant meth-heads in successful revolutionary armies and enduring communities is statistically negligible. Indeed, they usually provide fodder for the entrenched opposing side, and lurid tales of the Dangerous Other to entertain their partisans.

Much like the police officers involved in the Rodney King incident the feds could still try them on civil rights violations and serve time.

I'm always still in trouble again

Okay. Only the ones who are violent or corrupt, those who do or would cover for those who are violent or corrupt and/or those who enact/enforce policy that upholds and propagates structural inequality.

I do wonder if you'd be making the same argument if the victim was black.

What in the thread necromancy is this? 2014? 9 year old thread you decided to post on?

Like, it's certainly a horrendous incident, especially with the bastards not being held accountable or spending even a day in prison for their murder of this man whilst wearing a badge, but the posters here made their posts almost a decade ago. Like, I could see if there were new information or an update or something, but why this post, other than projection of your own issues into a 9 year old post?

You know it is strange when I read the btc's synopsis of what happened my first thought was the police officers should not have gotten away with it and I based my opinion just on the synopsis which did not bring up the race of the victim your first thought was to bring up the color of the victim so what was your point for necroing this 9 year old thread, to prove you are racist? We already knew that.
