Little Mr. Massive Fur Ball morphed into a lion today......

I really should have taken ;picts of the process. Talk about a screaming cat! It took two to hold him down and one to shave. In the end, he's a happy little lion. It totally changes his personality. Instead of a cowering little weasel, he's strutting around, prowling like he's a big bad lion. It's absolutely hilarious!

Our daughter and her husband had the lion cut done on their big Boy this June. He gets terrible mats and doesn't like anyone to even attempt to cut them off, so they had to have him put out for it. They had the vet cut his claws and clean his teeth at the same time.

I don't know if they will repeat the process next summer, but Sebastian didn't seem to mind the cut, and he liked being cooler. It was quite costly, though, because of the anesthetic.

Before and after.

Here you go. I cropped out the rest of the picture, but he was watching TV in this one. He likes to watch TV.

He's a very little cat. We forget just how little until his hair is gone.

I shave my cat myself....

she likes it, thinks its a massage....

didn't take that long to get her used to it...petting her while shaving her at the same time....

sometimes I have to stop and let her chill for a bit before she is ready for more ...

The first time I tried to shave him myself, I was using "people" clippers....... BIG NO NO! They don't work very well on fur. Consequently, after an hour or two, we called Petsmart and asked if they'd "clean it up" for us. When we picked him up, he looked great, and then they said "that'll be $65" and we promptly fell on the floor.

Needless to say, after having just about all of the clumps of long black fur flying around the house I could stand, I went to Petsmart this morning, purchased some pet clippers for about $80 and whala! Lion cat! And, I can keep him that way and not have to deal with the flying fur anymore.

Wow you have a *true* black cat! (true blacks have black skin as well as fur).

I'm trying to get my true Persian accustomed to the clipper so I can keep her hair short - she has a terrible undercoat that mats by itself! It is still a bit of a struggle clipping her by myself but like you I don't fancy shelling out that kind of money.

This thread could be the most frightening ever.

Dang, the last time I had Gabby done it was $35 with the anesthesia. I cut her fur myself now - I'll have to take pics next year. She goes from gray to white.

Our Gabby would sail off on a motorbike long before the clippers got anywhere near her!

And I see those cats and I'm sure their fur problems are better, now... but I have an overwhelming desire to knit them SWEATERS! It's WINTER, people! Unless you live somewhere really warm.... brrrr....

My daughter's boy got shaved in June, and what a good thing that was! It was sweltering here all July and into August, and he was so much more comfortable.

His fur is growing, but he is an indoor cat anyway, so the cold outside shouldn't bother him too much.

Okay, Mossy, your daughter's boy is fine. It's the other little lion I am considering knitting for. :brood:

I gave Jade her first semi-lion clip. I'm still trying to convince myself she's not skinny! All that long hair is very deceptive! Since she's an indoor cat I'm not too worried about her being cold.

I saved some of the fur from our long haired cat and gave it to my sister.

She wants to spin yarn with it.

For knitting.

Knowing there are none of you (accept maybe Analog) who are dumb enough to need a designation, I took Gabby to the vet today. She, Pesticator, Siren (cats) and Scooter (lone dog) all had to go. Everybody got shots for various ailments. Gabby got antibiotics for an infected claw bed and wormer just cause she was there (Pest did. too - everyone else gets it down the throat - oh joy... :sigh:). Anyway, she was walking funny a while ago - not like she didn't want to put weight on the leg, more like it was collapsing under it - the leg she got her shots in. If she isn't better in a few hours we'll be making an emergency call to the vet.

I had that happen with one of my cats...I forget what the shot was for, but anyway it took a day or so for his leg to recover.

Teal, my cat is dying, very slowly, but you might want to know about this...

http://www.itsfortheanimals.com/VAS.HTM

What should we do? Please speak to your Vet! Your vet should tell you the risks. Also a vaccine protocol is being advised to veterinarians. Giving a 3-year rabies vaccine annually should be avoided. Vaccinations should not be given between the shoulder blades, if a tumor develops, it is close to impossible to treat. Rabies and Feline Leukemia vaccines should be administered in the hind legs. You may also want to discuss with your vet how necessary it is for your cat to receive all of these vaccines. Not all cats may need every vaccine; indoor cats may not need the same vaccination protocol as outdoor cats. The veterinary task force is recommending that single indoor cats not be vaccinated with Feline Leukemia because the chances of them getting VAS (Vaccine Associated Sarcoma) is greater than getting Feline Leukemia.

Whether to vaccinate or not to vaccinate your cat is a decision you should make after knowing all of the facts. And as a cat owner you have a right to know about the risks and benefits of vaccines so that you can make decisions that you can live with.

The vet said my cat probably has this cancer, but because she was vaccinated in the rear hip area, it developed into a very isolated and encapsulated form, that didn't immediately cause her a health risk.

I always had my cats vaccinated in the loose skin over the hip/leg, I never liked the between the shoulder blade shot, and for years here in texas, I did them myself before they quit selling the vaccines to individuals.

They have to be careful though not to go into the muscle.

I do not get my animals "all" the vaccinations anyway, only the ones I think they need or might be exposed too, and since Pooh has been totally indoor for the last 5 years, I haven't vaccinated her at all.

We don't get booster shots every year, either because our cat (used to be 2, now 1) also is an indoor puss.

I have heard about felines developing cancers in the injection sites, and also have read a lot about animals not needing the yearly injections.

I am sorry about your cat, Zel. It's a hard thing to deal with.

Our Murphell also doesn't get one of the vaccines anyway. I think it is the Feline Leukemia one, because she had a bad allergic reaction to the first one she had. And since both our cats were/are indoor, the vet figured she didn't really need it, and hasn't had one since. She is 15 this fall.
