Long ago when some of John the Baptists followers asked him about his relationship with Jesus he not only put Jesus’ life into perspective but the relationship to physical and spiritual as well.
“He must grow greater, I must grow less. He who comes from above is above all others; he who is of the earth is earthly himself and speaks in an earthly way. He who comes from heaven bears witness to the things he has seen and heard, but his testimony is not accepted by anybody; though anyone who does accept his testimony is attesting that God is true, since he whom God has sent speaks God's own words, for God gives him the Spirit without reserve.”
{John 3:30 - 3:34 NJB}
In our day and age it is impossible for us to place more importance upon things we cannot see (spiritual) over those we detect with our five senses (physical). But the impossible we must do because those things we see, touch, hear, smell, or taste are short lived.
One day a rich man became sick and on his way to the doctor met a poor family who were down on their luck. As the man was about to pass them by he heard a small voice say, “If you’ll bless family with all you have you will live.” Because the man’s car was so well insulated against outside noises he knew the voice didn’t come from outside the car so the man ignored it. A few minutes later, “If you’ll bless that family you just passed will all you have you will live,” the voice said again. “Who are you and where are you,” the man responded? Seconds later, “I am the Spirit of those you just passed and I reside in your heart. If you’ll bless them with all you have you’ll live.” The car again fell silent.
Suddenly the mans love of his possessions became second to his compassion then touched deeply the man turned his car around picked up the poor family and took them home and adopted them. Later that day he changed his will leaving everything he owned to the family. Still feeling ill the man headed for the doctors office the next morning but minutes after he started his heart stopped beating and the man died.
As the man approached the huge gates of God’s Eternal Garden the man asked the Gatekeeper, “I was told if I gave my riches I’d live why, then is when I did I find myself in the land of the dead.” Looking at the man the Gatekeeper replied, “This is the land of the living, behold the land of the dead.” Suddenly a cold wind blew and the man found himself standing at the edge of endless darkness and pain shot into heart such as he’d never felt before, “Thus it is for all eternity.” Instantly the man was again standing with the Gatekeeper, “Enter into the Glory of the Lord good and faithful servant,” his voice resounded throughout time and space.
The needs of that which is eternal must increase as that which is temporary must decrease!
Jesus does…The impossible!
