A horrifying event. It is a moving painting; the sympathy of those around Jesus who loved Him. The soldiers are lost in the background.
The stark brutality of what is and is to happen is nevertheless softened by the lush treatment the artist brings to it. Look at the sadness portrayed there, but contrasted by it's glowing quality--as if light is proceeding from it.

Christ carrying the CrossThat one irritates me. The error was in Mel Gibson's The Passion as well. Notice how the crosses on either side of where Jesus' cross with go are shaped like an upper case T. This is pretty accurate, and Jesus would have carried the crossbar to the site. But notice that Jesus' cross is different in the painting, resembling a perfect traditional crucifix shape. That kinda traditionalism irks me.

Why is it “out of taste”? Isn’t biblical art supposed to depict actual biblical events? It’s not my fault that the Bible tells stories of god killing innocent babies. I think you should be able to deal with reality and not “report” me for simply posting pictures of real events from the Bible. It's the truth, according to you. Don't get mad at me for posting the truth.

I really like how well Caravaggio used light in his works. I would consider him the primary originator or at least one of the first people to popularize chiaroscuro.
I was just noticing something about The Sacrifice of Isaac, you'll notice that Isaac is not really a boy but a young man. I know I've heard that some scholars believe that Isaac was 33 when this happened, I don't know if there is solid evidence for this, or it's just wishful thinking by scholars looking for more ways in which Isaac foretells the sacrifice of Jesus, but I do appreciate how Caravaggio gives us a slight glimpse of that. Obviously I don't think Isaac is 33 here, he's probably somewhere in his early twenties. I think it gives a good picture when you're reading the Biblical telling of this image, especially when Isaac asks where the sacrifice will come from and Abraham says that God will provide.
I always pictured a little boy in that story, but I think it's so much more powerful with a young man.

Wow, Mac Xena says that painting looks like an effeminate guy. I reluctantly agree. Why not remove it? I think John the Baptist ought to look like a guy guy.
Kelp

Remove it? Why? I don't know why Da Vinci did that, but it's still a masterful piece of Biblical art.
Besides, I think the majority of representations of Jesus have been pretty girly. Nevertheless, I'd hate to lose them, though.

Most clothing and architecture in classic art are reflections of the time in which they were painted. Back in the day, it was expected, partially since it wasn't easy to find examples of period clothing (except for the Greeks and Romans in the Renaissance.) So I'd guess it was a Renaissance painting. I can't think of a painting that has details of the age in which it was painted, but there were a lot of "religious" paintings that had people in it dressed in 17thc. clothes and etc.

I'm baffled what the painting is supposed to depicit. At first I thought it was the arrest of Jesus. However the central figure is shown as vigorously resisting. Clenced face and all. Moreover the event seems to be taking place inside a cave.
I suspect it's Samson, because of the hair clenched in the sword-wielding dood's fist.

Only 12 people? Maybe the artist wanted to leave Judas out, or wanted to do the Last Supper after he was gone, but note the fish, not eaten yet. There’s also something on the table that looks like a transparent cup of wine that’s more than ½ full. Also, what’s with only 7 halos? Why do the guys on the bottom have no haloes? I guess, the artist was too lazy? Or is it NOT the Last Supper?
Maybe Judas was late?

If you let your cursor hover over the thumbnail, you'll see that that's a picture of Hosea. At any rate, I was kidding. I'm well aware that people were generally not clean and gorgeous back then.
