In Psalm 144, we read the following:
4 Man is like a breath;
his days are like a fleeting shadow.
5 Part your heavens, O LORD, and come down;
touch the mountains, so that they smoke.
6 Send forth lightning and scatter {the enemies};
shoot your arrows and rout them.
So what did the Psalmist want in verse 5 when he asked the Lord to come down?

I would guess he wanted the lord to save him from his enemies, as in Psalm 18. It is salvation for those who wait for Him (Isa 64). Also Ps 104:32 Ex 19:18 Na 1:3-6 Hab 3:3-6 Heb 12:18

IMO it is symbolic language for eschatological judgment. You know, the Day of the Lord.

Could it not also be read the same way when the same type of language is used in the Olivet Discourse?

Of course. That is what it's about isn't it?
