That Joseph Smith claimed to have been given a revelation by Christ himself? In person in the forest?

Yes. It's true, depending on which version of the "First Vision" you read.

I suppose this is not a critical point to Mormons, but it is to me. If Mr. Smith claims that it was Christ who gave him the vision, in person, and Mr. Smith is still alive, I find the claim to be self-contradictory. Since Mormons believe that Christ is "godly" but not "God", it's not an issue for them. (No man may see My face and live)

I don't understand your point. Are you claiming that everyone who ever looked on Jesus in the flesh, starting with his mother Mary and her husband Joseph the night he was born, died from it???
And 'Mr. Smith" is not still alive; he died in 1844.
