Zwan Call It Quits
Corgan announces dissolution of second band in three years

Billy Corgan announced this morning that Zwan, the band he started two years ago, have broken up.
"I think my heart was in Smashing Pumpkins," Corgan told a local news affiliate in Chicago this morning. "I think it was naive of me to think that I could find something that would mean as much to me. I enjoyed my experience in Zwan, but at the end of the day, without that sense of deeper family and loyalty, it becomes like anything else. In some cases I felt that the band members viewed it as something they could decide to do or not to do."

Corgan started the band after the December 2000 breakup of the Pumpkins. He enlisted Pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, guitarists Matt Sweeney and David Pajo, and bassist Paz Lenchantin in late 2001 and the band released its debut, Mary Star of the Sea in January 2003.

Corgan's comments about band loyalty might center around Pajo, who fronted his own band, Papa M, in addition to Zwan duty. In early August, Lenchantin left Zwan to dedicate more time to Pajo's band.

With Zwan's demise, so goes Djali Zwan, an acoustic incarnation of the same band. In March, Corgan told Rolling Stone that he was going to film and record the band this fall for a CD and DVD due next year, but those plans have presumably been scrapped.

And though Corgan said in March that he "love[s] the romance and safety of a band," when asked this if he would be starting a new group, Corgan responded, "I'm thirty-six, I'm ready for a solo career."

Before that, though, Corgan plans to immerse himself in a non-musical venture. On Wednesday, he'll present some of his poetry as part of a multi-media presentation at the thirty-first annual Reading Series for the Poetry Center of Chicago. Corgan has also been shopping a collection of poetry around to publishers.

I can't say that I'm really all that disappointed. Zwan was just okay. I think I'd rather 'remember' smashing pumpkins than see billy try to reincarnate them every once in awhile.

The Smashing Pumpkins had their place in early-to mid nineties Generation X music. Now that the era has passed, so must billy's songs.

I can't say I'm looking forward to this. I don't know a whole lot about poetry, but I know that there's a diffrence between writing lyrics and writing a poem.

It's good to hear that he's into other mediums for his art. If he's still going on with the trist tripe, though, not sure if I'll be interested.

I think the fact that only myself and BHN have replied to this is good evidence that nobody cares about zwan

Uhm.... Zwan is Corgan's current band. Though not for long.

Zwan seemed to be just a water-down rehash of Smashing Pumpkins anyways.

Yup.

Am I the only one who noticed a period in the 90s where there seemed to be an unusual number of blond, female bass guitarists? I remember at one point counting 5 or 6. Off the top of my head was the Pumpkins and White Zombie. I forget the others. :ribrown:

zwan was nice. it was good to see Billy Corrigan not pretending to be a vampire and singing of love. It's too bad that it had to end but i think maybe this band was like...you know, him on the rebound.

Smashing Pumpkins was much more interesting musically though. They moved from garage/grunge into (some) electronica and lots of pop elements through the years. I think their song Eye from the Lost Highway soundtrack is one of the best songs SP ever made.

That was a cool song. It wasn't on any of their albums though was it?

I believe it's on their Greatest Hits album.

I never liked Zwan... The only good band to come out of a 90's band is A Perfect Circle.

Technically, Zwan didn't come out of the 90's.

A band that was specifically formed with the express intent of attacking Christianity.

I love listening to Manson, and even I find it hard to understand how a Christian can be a fan of Perfect Circle...

There's only 2 tracks that APC recorded that make my spiritual ears bleed. I obviously skip those tracks. The rest are songs mostly about Greek Mythology and sour friendships.

I had never heard that, but I wouldn't be surprised. I really liked Tool, but Eulogy still leaves a bad taste in my mouth. And of course, APC involves Tool's frontman.

What was "Judith" about? I had susupected that it was about knowing somebody who became a Christian.

There where a couple of Manson songs that I liked too, but for the most part I thought they where a circus. I've read a couple of Manson's articles, and I thought that they where kind of dumb.

Tool's lead singer does seem to love sneaking in (or in some cases blatantly saying) anti-Christian sentiment. I don't think I would say he's any worse than Manson though.

I vaguely remember a Manson song with the following chorus:

Prick your finger is it done
The moon how now eclipsed the sun
The angel has spread its wings
The time has come for bitter things

Not really any worse (or better) than APC's:

Praise the one who left you broken down and paralyzed
He did it all for you

Except that Manson has openly stated for years that his personal beliefs are partly Christian.

Roughly one third Christian, one third Satanist and one third Nietzchean. He primarily hates conservative Christianity, fundamentalists like me, etc. :risilver:

Hehe, so he opts for the buffet approach to religion? I can't say I've really ever heard him expound on religion outside of his stage schtick.

Reverend Lovejoy to Lisa Simpson at the ice cream social, "Try the unitarian blend."

Lisa, "But there's nothing there."

Rev. Lovejoy, "Exxxxxxxxxxxxactly."

I vaguely remember a Manson song with the following chorus:

That's from "Crypt Orchid," I believe, off the Anti-Christ Superstar album. I'm not a Manson fan, but I once was. I never cared for the satanic schtick, but I admired his gutsiness until he turned into a circus (as someone aptly mentioned).

Coal Chamber was another one. And Motley Crue got a female drummer.

I think that's correct. He also cops that line for the live version of Antichrist Superstar. (I used to be a big Manson fan in high school). Once the shock and awe factor wore off I got over him pretty quick. Slipknot fans will probably have the same thing happen when they get to college.

You know what's funny about this thread? Both Marilyn Manson and A Perfect Circle were brought up in it, but neither directly in connection to Zwan. But there is a connection: Paz left APC to become Zwan's new bassist. And when she left APC, who took her place? Jeordie White, better known as Twiggy Ramirez, formerly of Marilyn Manson!

Wow, I didn't even realize Twiggy left Manson.
