Though I'm a Christian, my pro-life stance really has little to do with my faith. While I believe that the seed and the egg alone aren't life, in the same way that a chicken's unfertilized egg will never hatch, I simply believe that a fertilized egg is a living organizm that is not any life form than a human life form. So I believe that the killing of a human being is wrong in the same way that most people believe murder is wrong.

Are there any good authors on this sort of thing? I haven't personally heard anyone espouse this, but I'm certain it must exist in decent numbers.

Well, I guess that would fit the bill quite well.

Libertarians For Life
http://l4l.org
is another organization that was started by an atheist, and has some of the best pro-life arguments I have ever seen. The arguments are presented from a libertarian perspective, of course.

l4l does have excellent arguments, I agree, though they often beg the question.

I simply believe that so long as a first trimester "baby" if you will, does not experience pain, than an abortion is permissible. My issue is the destruction of a sentient entity. This is from a materialist who, admittedly, only finds immaterial symbolism in reference to "life". For this reason I will likely always support a womens right to abortion, however hyper-rational it may sometimes come off as.

If a retarded person (enough so that they are unaware of self) is in a comma and we can verify that they cannot feel pain, would you be ok with any person walking up and stabbing them to death?

Or, how about any comma patient, is the only reason not to kill them because they might eventually come out of it? A child "might eventually be born".

A fetus is human life (what else would it be?). It is a sentient being in the earliest development of life and will quickly become aware of life. But what do you use to define sentience?
