Some idiots are boo-hooing the safe haven program that allows women to leave their babies at safe spots rather than dumping them into trash cans:

Honestly, I cannot understand the critics of this law. They argue that the law creates an “easy out” for reluctant mothers. Darn straight! The fact is that these girls and women didn’t legally kill the baby in their bodies, nor did they abandon them in a dumpster or toilet. ..... The Department of Social Services, which oversees the Safe Haven program reports that the Baby Safe Haven hotline has helped thirty women to get into a parenting or adoption plan. They also said that “parents give up their babies for various reasons, including post-partum psychosis, emotional immaturity, and social isolation.” Whatever the reasons, the woman is still making a conscious choice to “save” her baby from her own emotional and social problems. I say these women are heroes.

I agree that these laws are a good thing. Unfortunately, too few women know about them, or take advantage of them--they either don't know where to go, or are too afraid that they will be arrested for child abandonment, despite the fact that the law (presumably) guarantees no reprisals against the mother. Some just don't care.

The idea of the sanctity of life has all but disappeared from the fabric of our nation. Sensless random killings, mothers and fathers tossing their infants off of bridges and overpasses--it seems that life has little value anymore, and these Safe Haven laws seem flawed in that they presume that the women who would otherwise toss their baby in a dumpster actually care enough about the life they created to take it to a Safe Haven.

Yeah, I don't get it, the easy out is the whole appeal.
