For those ignorant of anything Canadian, York is the second biggest University in Toronto (after UofT itself). Anyway, I grabbed one of the far left rags (Excalibur) York's students put out to have something to read on my way home. What originally caught my eye was what I assumed would be some race baiting article, but I ended up ignoring it altogether for something else on the main page:

Abortion Debate Banned.

Since I can only reprint two paragraphs, I'll just summarize instead:

A representative of the Canadian Centre for Bio-Ethical Reform (Jose Ruba) was to debate a representative of Freethinkers, Skeptics and Atheists at York's Michael Payton (take a guess as to who was taking which side :teeth:). The Student Center, however, canceled the debate at the last minute. Student Center vice-chair Kelly Holloway said, and I quote:

"The reason is that it's an equity concern for the Student Center. Having a debate over whether or not women should be able to choose what to do with their own bodies is tantamount to having a debate about whether or not a man should be able to beat his wife"

The Student Center's Dark Lord council voted unanimously to cancel the debate.

Both of the debaters were annoyed at the cancellation, and the atheist debater (who seems to be way smarter than the entire school council put together) said that Holloway unwittingly hurt their own cause by canceling it.

Sheesh... even universities still don't realize that the fetus is a separate life that is temporarily attached to the mother's womb.
It's got it's own blood source for crying out loud!

Ah, student politics! So earnestly incoherent... :ahem: It should be noted that the stance of student bodies isn't the fault of the university itself.

If anyone would like to be annoyed further, the article itself is here (http://www.excal.on.ca/cms2/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=5850&Itemid=2).

The last thing we want is for the young people (who will eventually be running this country) to think out important issues for themselves.

Hey, I just realized something. She compared the proposition "women should be able to "choose what to do with their own bodies"" with the proposition "a man should be able to beat his wife". Hyuk hyuk hyuk.

To be honest, I'm not surprised that the debate was banned. Some people would rather silence members of the opposition than actually consider what they have to say. I don't always agree with what members of the pro-choice movement have to say, but at least I take time to consider their viewpoint before I reject it. So long as they're willing to hear me out, I'm willing to hear them out.
