Hi all!
Today is a fast day on the Jewish calendar. It is the "Fast of Gedaliah" (see http://www.ou.org/chagim/tzomgedaliah/Default.htm and http://www.jewfaq.org/holidaye.htm), on which we commemorate the murder of Gedaliah ben Ahikam (see II Kings 25:22-25 and Jeremiah 40:5-41:3). It is the "fast of the seventh [month]" referred to in Zechariah 7:5 and 8:19.
On the Fast of Gedaliah 16 years ago, DW (who wasn't even my fiancee then) & I were at her cousins in Beer Sheva (http://ohr.edu/tw/weinbach/loveland/lland067.htm) for our just-concluded two-day Rosh Hashanah (New Year) holyday. We were talking about the Fast of Gedaliah & I was trying to show off my (minimal) knowledge of Hebrew. I said, about Gedaliah, "Rakhtzu otoh" literally, "They washed him;" what I meant to say was "Ratzkhu otoh," literally, "They murdered him." DW's cousin started to chuckle & said, "Well, you might say that they took him to the cleaners!"
Be well!
