View Full Version : We Are Getting A Puppy! W00T!

Yes, after 3 years of doglessness, we are getting a white Labrador Retriever puppy very soon!

I'd never seen a white one before...they are gorgeous! Our 2 cats miss their dog and will like having a puppy to play with. They think dogs smell awesome. I've never raised a puppy before...only inherited dogs by joining households where they were already present. This will be fun.

We always name our pets "people" names in this household. So, we've been thinking about "Anne" or "Annie" if it is female (though Craig thinks "Evelyn" would be fun, too because of a Frank Zappa song reference). I was asking my 11-year-old niece about male names on the phone today. She reads some book series about werewolves and cat warriors or something. So, I asked if there were any white werewolves. She said there was one. I asked what his name was and she said, "Kevin." For some reason I just fell on the floor laughing! Imagine introducing my dog to people: This is Kevin! I love it...a lot! Craig is not at all sure about this. He wants "Chester," or "Jack."

Anyway, I met a wonderful white Lab named Jade a few weeks ago and it turns out her parents are going to have a fresh litter in a few weeks. We're expecting a call when the pups are born and will visit several times and select our favorite, then bring him/her home at 8 weeks and the "fun" will begin. Craig has done this many times, so he's in charge of "mechanics," while I will take the lead on behavior.

White Labs rule!

Ha! Actually, "Vinny" would have been a great name for a black lab...very Italian.

Congratulations on the new 4-legged friend. "Jadis" came to find, mostly because of the "white witch" in Narnia. But that's pretty similar to 'Jade'.

I think you should name the puppy "Trout".

Aww, cute!

As to a name, one thing to look at is how well you can shorten it. Some of our dogs have had longer names, such as Indiana and Huckleberry. If we catch them doing something wrong, or simply want to get their attention quickly, we can shorter their names easily to Huck for Huckleberry, or Indy for Indiana (sometimes Indy is called Pindy, don't ask why).

If it helps to give you some ideas, I'll list some of the names that we've gone through for both dogs and cats (it's long, but I've had dogs and cats my whole life, and many have passed on).

(Dogs)
Chauncy
Kayla
Kirby (has been used for both a boy and a girl dog)
Indiana
Huckleberry

(Cats)
Abraham
Hannah
Highlander
Hercules

(Notice how I completely ignore the suggestion to name the dog "Trout.")

Well, if we get a male, Craig wants "Jack" and his son wants "Jake," so it looks like we're going in the general "J" direction. I'm still all for "Kevin," but I think I'll get pummeled if I keep that up. Seriously. Who has a dog named Kevin? How cool is that?

It won't matter, anyway. I want a girl doggie. I think boy dogs are embarrassing in a lot of ways. In fact, I think boys can be embarrassing, too.

My aunt got a Vizsla puppy a few months ago, and is leaving him unaltered so she can show him. :egad: For a former cat person, she's really gotten into dogs; she got a German short-haired pointer a couple years ago from a rescue shelter. She picks people names too. Her cat was named Claudia, and my uncle's cat is named Maurice (he's celebrating his 20th birthday on April 1st). The dogs are named Bela and Lenya.

You know what kind of dogs are really good? Dachshunds, they're great family pets. They're small (well, except for the 30-40 pound throwbacks to the original breed of dachshunds like the one I have) and very loyal. They can also be guard dogs, because their barks can be more like that of a larger dog, and in fact have been known to confront much larger dogs, as if they don't know how small they are.

Of course, having had dachshunds my whole life, I might be a tad biased....

OBP: Never heard of a Vizsla before. Googled it. They look like Weimaraners, sorta. Good looking critter.

Nicholas: I have a neighbor with a long-haired Dachshund named Luke. They just got a miniature Dachshund puppy named Daphne. I like them both. However, my husband firmly believes that any dog under 60 lbs. is simply not dog enough.

Darth: :glare:

BabyC: I've seen, like half an episode in my life. My sister is a big fan. I'm planning to pay for serious obedience training for the pup, myself, my husband and - most of all - my step-son who is find of breaking rules. I'll add the show to my DVR list. Thanks! :thumb:

Mudge: I must be over tired. I didn't get it.

Not dog enough!?!?! Your husband must not know dachshunds. You should tell him that Dachsunds can be as tough as they are loveable. I may have mentioned this before, but they do not care how big another dog is, they will bark at a dog like a Great Dane as if it were a dog their size. Remember, they were bred to go down badger holes and hold onto the neck of a badger until it was dead. As far as I'm concerned, Dachshunds are the best dogs on earth.

They tend to stick close. OTOH, they are very needy.

Nothing personal at all, Nicholas. It's just that, for my hubby...size matters. We once visited friends in Pennsylvania who had a Pug. I had never seen one up close before. I fell utterly in love with that little alien face and perky personality. I made a big campaign for one of our own. This is when I learned of the size issue. He needs a dog he can roll around with and rough house with. Whatever. I've got my cats, so my need to nurture little critters is satisfied. And, I've gotta say, I like big dogs, too.

This whole thing makes me want to recommend the movie "The Ugly Dachshund". It's an older movie, but it's hilarious. Basically the husband wants a Great Dane, the wife has a dachshund that has puppies, and the vet has the husband take a puppy from a Great Dane litter that was rejected and have the dachshund nurse him. The Great Dane grows up thinking it's a dachshund, and the puppies getting him blamed for their shenanigans. It's hilarious.

You can introduce him (or her) as, "This is our new white Lab, Coat!"

this is weird. A Vizsla just showed up at my brother's house yesterday.

They are trying to find out who it belongs to, but so far no luck. They walked around the neighborhood, called the police station, the humane society, and were trying to find a vet to see if she has a chip.

My brother had a weimeraner who died last year, and the vizsla looks an awful lot like a weimeraner. So if he can't find the owner, he is going to keep her.

Wow. That's an expensive dog to lose. I hope your brother's prepared for a high-energy dog that demands lots of attention.

yeah she looks well taken cared for. But she had no tags on her. And she has completely taken with my brother and his wife and doesn't seem to be moping around or anything.

To jack:

they named her "Sarah"

Its an inside joke. Every girl his son has dated was named "Sarah" by weird coincidence and the last one didnt turn out so well so he swore off any more "Sarahs" - so they named the dog Sarah to mess with him. Not sure if it will stick or not if they do keep her.

nobody ever claimed the VIsla that my brother found. He checked it for a chip and she didnt have one. He put an ad in the paper and nobody claimed her. Nobody reported her missing to animal control.

They are gonna keep her. I think they changed the name from "Sarah" to "Sadie"

Here is a photo of her:

She is a pretty dog, Sparko!

I spoke with our breeder the other day. Pups are due any day now and we get pick of the litter. She has small litters, so that will be important. I'll need every bit of the 8 weeks they'll ween to recover from the knee surgery, so the timing will be perfect.

We're so excited!
