I just finished watching M. Night Shyamalan's movie "Signs". I've noticed a real shift in the content of films lately, which seems to follow closely to thought that I find going on at schools, at the workplace, and in America.
With films like "Fight Club" and Shyamalan's "6th Sense", it was pretty clear that a relativistic view of reality was the dominant force. It seems that in our culture relativism and the question of true reality made a large impact on American thought. In both of these films, the ending reveals a parallel reality that was operating along with the "truth" that you percieved in the first part, therefore making the viewer question all that they had seen and thought.
Lately with films such as "Signs" and "The Sum of All Fears", it appears as if a significant shift is occurring. We are now, in direct contrast to the escape of reality, forced to deal with the harsh effects that it can have. The reality of reality. In "Signs" were are faced with the actual, frightening presence of aliens, and not "Independence Day", Will Smith aliens, but aliens appearing according to real life. In "The Sum of All Fears" a nuclear bomb is actually detonated killing thousands of Americans. I think this goes along with our wake up call of 9-11. Americans have been forced to find a means of explanation for the pain of reality and a fallen world. It seems that spirituality makes its way to the front lines quite often.
This seems to me to be a good question to ask. Does God love us, does God even care? Good for America! Question pain!
