Vladimir Putin launched a fresh attack on the United States, saying U.S. advisers were involved in the Georgian conflict and accusing the White House of provoking the crisis to help Republicans win the U.S. election.

In a way, the US has been pushing Russia's buttons for a while. Missile defense shields and their unbridled support of Georgia certainly hasn't helped anything.
But, Putin is a silly opportunist. The US was not trying to provoke Russia into doing anything against Georgia, nevermind the Republicrats.

He's not looking to persuade people over here: this demagoguery is aimed primarily to the people of Russia, maybe secondarily to Russia's allies.

Of course you wouldn't, which is why he has Yuri using mind control devices to prevent the United States from retaliating against Russia when he launches the invasion.
