John McLaughlin, long time host of the influential political discussion/debate show "The McLaughlin Group" (which premiered in 1984) passed away on Tuesday at his home in Washington D.C of prostate cancer less than two days after he missed the first episode of his show in 34 years. He was 89 years old.
The show featured himself seated in the middle usually between two conservatives and two liberals. Regulars on his show included Pat Buchanan, Jack Germond, Robert Novak, Eleanor Clift, Clarence Page, Morton Kondracke and Mort Zuckerman. It's contentious often combative atmosphere became the role model for many shows seen on cable news channels today.
