View Full Version : Friends in Peru

Trout

The Trout family has some dear friends who've decided to take a three month trip to South America, part of the time is going to be used volunteering at an orphanage.

For lack of a better term, we'll call them the "Crazy Baker" family. Which includes Mr. and Mrs. Baker, their daughter and son.

Please join me in prayer not only for their safety, but that they would be able to shine the light of Christ wherever they go.

And if you'd be so kind, pray also that this time will draw them closer together as a family, and that this trip would be truly life changing.

They must be really out there if your family consider them "crazy". They sure need prayer. :teeth:

HA . . . That's a good point.

Actually the Baker's are pretty solid people, they do have a little touch of Hippie in them, which should make Kelp happy.

 We have several members of our church who go on similar mission trips to Africa and India. One week is a life changing experience, I can only imagine what three months would do.

They'll come back changed people. IMHO I think everyone here (meaning US and Canada) should take a turn doing missionary work in a third world country.

UPDATE:

Mrs. Baker Writes:

So we are here at the base of the Andes. We are at about 10 K ft. but it does not feel at all like the mountains. Feels like more like NY (not that Iīve ever been but Iīve seen videos..) There are tons of honking cars cruising very fast and barely missing each other.Do not seem to be any lanes. Guess thatīs more like a German city. Anyway, trash burning on the streets in the morning and lots of exhaust making it very hard to breathe. I donīt think Iīll go for a run here. The dogs are loose and little 3 to 5 year old children are walking around on the muddy side streets. We visited our possible volunteer sites today and will start the work tomorrow. [ . . . ]

Thanks so much for praying!!! Besides the other great things you listed on the blog , pray that we will be led by Our Father in where and when we should go as we are down here.

VERY AWESOME UPDATE ON THE BAKERS

Mrs. Baker writes:

I woke up yesterday morning really missing Colorado fall. This ciudad is demasiado busy. Too many carros and exhaust. So ,thank God , just in time all of us voluntarios left the city and went to visit a monastery. I did not even go in. Finally, I was out where there were trees and not the smell and noise from traffic. I went for a walk alone. Ahhhhh

Then we all went for a walk along a river. There were families out picnicing along with their sheep and pigs. We are seeing the typical peruvian women with the colorful shawls on their backs to carry things. I will have to send photos later (despues)

We are leaving here on Tuesday . I need to totally finish up with a boy with CP that Iīve been working with. Heīs about nine and is spoon fed while he is reclining on the floor. (He is also blind.) Any way he can now sit up in a wheelchair and almost totally indepedently feed himself with an adaptive splint I made that can hold his spoon at the correct angle for him to put it in his mouth when he uses his shoulder muscles to bring his arm up. I also made a type of frame from PVC pipe to hold his bowl. In two days he amazingly learned to feed himself almost totally independently. Tomorrow I am teaching the nurse type women all the details on how this works and two volunteers will work with him until the end of the month when I am sure he will be totally independent with eating. You should have seen him smile when I first put the spoon in his splint that was still warm from molding it. He put it in his mouth and grinned.Others at the orphanage both children and staff are amazed. Onward ho! I donīt know if Iīll be able to do anything more like this with such quick results.

Let's continue to hold them up in prayer.

So, the Bakers are now in Trujillo Peru. Haven't heard much from them in the last week, but I trust that God is still watching over them.

They are volunteering at the school for kids with disabilities.

Here's a picture of them with the 18,000 ft Andes in the background.

Please continue to pray that they shine the light of Christ and remain in His perfect will as they continue their journey.

UPDATE FROM MRS. BAKER:

I also am really enjoying my volunteer work here. I have to take a very busy, noisy, crowded bus an hour into Trujillo. At the school for kids with disablilities, I am finding that they have not had anyone to adjust equipment or make adaptations for the kids with CP. Iīve been observing them, then creating adaptations so that kids without a grasp or much motor control in arms, hands, or legs can now write, eat, paint, or stand up straight in their walker, or sit up straight in their chairs. Itīs just the typical stuff that OTīs do in the states but apparently itīs not typical here.. The kids are quite happy as are their teachers. Glad Iīm here for them. AND I carry my Spanish dictionary and try my best to communicate. Hands and smiles and just a few words can go a long way. I need to take some more real Spanish lessons. I may start next week.

She also speaks of her husband and daughter being sick, apparently So. America ain't all that easy on the digestion.

Please continue to pray!
