Biblical Languages 301 Guidelines

This is where we come to delve into the biblical text. Theology is not our foremost thought, but we realize it is something that will be dealt with in nearly every conversation. Feel free to use the original languages to make your point (meaning Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic). This is an exegetical discussion area, so please limit topics to purely biblical ones.

This is not the section for debates between theists and atheists. While a theistic viewpoint is not required for discussion in this area, discussion does presuppose a respect for the integrity of the Biblical text (or the willingness to accept such a presupposition for discussion purposes) and a respect for the integrity of the faith of others and a lack of an agenda to undermine the faith of others.

  • Some notes on the judgment of the great whore.

    Whore = Greek πόρνη

    I took the following from http://www.greekbible.com/index.php

    πόρνη, 1) a woman who sells her body for sexual uses 1a) a prostitute, a harlot, one who yields herself to defilement for the sake of gain 1b) any woman indulging in unlawful sexual intercourse, whether for gain or for lust 2) metaph. an idolatress 2a) of "Babylon" i.e. Rome, the chief seat of idolatry

    πόρνος, 1) a man who prostitutes his body to another's lust for hire 2) a male prostitute 3) a man who indulges in unlawful sexual intercourse, a fornicator

    πορνεία , 1) illicit sexual intercourse 1a) adultery, fornication, homosexuality, lesbianism, intercourse with animals etc. 1b) sexual intercourse with close relatives; Lev. 18 1c) sexual intercourse with a divorced man or woman; Mk. 10:11,12 2) metaph. the worship of idols 2a) of the defilement of idolatry, as incurred by eating the sacrifices offered to idols

    πορνεύω, 1) to prostitute one's body to the lust of another 2) to give one's self to unlawful sexual intercourse 2a) to commit fornication 3) metaph. to be given to idolatry, to worship idols 3a) to permit one's self to be drawn away by another into idolatry

    Prostitution is said to be the oldest profession on earth.
    and also the most scorned/condemned.
    Seeming to be the source of all hypocrisy.

    Matthew 21:31 laying stress on that:

    Amen, I say to you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes go into the kingdom of God before you.

    Hebrew "zonah" = prostitute, harlot, whore.

    There is a Jewish saying: "you cannot threaten a dove with wine"

    dove = "yonah"

    wine = "yayin"

    Which are meant to be understood as "zonah" and "zayin".

    "zayin" is the name of the seventh letter, the meaning of which is "weapon", but also "male organ".

    Seventh letter having value 7, a number that occurs many times in Revelation ...

      Revelation 17:5, And on her forehead was written a name of mystery: “Babylon the great, mother of prostitutes and of earth's abominations.”.

      Name Babylon is declared in Genesis 11:9, Therefore, He named it Babel, for there the Lord confused the language of the entire earth, and from there the Lord scattered them upon the face of the entire earth.

      which answers their plans worded in v.5,
      And they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make ourselves a name, lest we be scattered upon the face of the entire earth."

      Cain was the first city-builder,

      And Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch, and he was building a city, and he called the city after the name of his son, Enoch.

      Cain would be avenged sevenfold -- so again the number 7. He got a mark too, a sign, according to Rashi placed on his forehead:

      and the Lord placed a mark on Cain: He engraved a letter of His Name on his forehead.

      Enoch in the generationslist of Adam via Seth being the seventh generation, seeming to endure forever, that you might think Enoch is the all-time city, the great city, founded on brothermurder.

        " that sits upon many waters" refers to Jeremiah 51:13,

        You, who dwell by many waters, abundant in treasures, your end has come, the measure of your violence.

        where v.7 says:
        Babylon is a golden cup in the Lord's hand, it intoxicates all the earth; nations have drunk of her wine, therefore, nations are mad.
        ,
        after whichRevelation 17:2, "(...) holding in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the impurities of her sexual immorality

        and. v.11, Polish the arrows, fill the quivers; the Lord has aroused the desire of the kings of Media, for His aim is to destroy her, for the Lord's vengeance is the vegeance of His Temple.

        So never believe Preterist "scholars" like Massyngberde Ford or Charles C. Torrey or F. J. A. Hort.

        Jeremiah 51:8, Suddenly, Babylon has fallen and has been broken; wail over her, take balm for her pain, perhaps she may be healed.

        cf. Revelation 18:10, Alas! Alas! You great city,
        you mighty city, Babylon!
        For in a single hour your judgment has come.”

        "Suddenly" also in Mark 13:36 (but the notion also underlies Matthew 24): "lest he come suddenly and find you asleep",

        By which you might know that all of it does transgress historical, timebound, notions.
