View Full Version : Left Behind Discussion

Okay, okay we received five new subscribers for the month of October so I am keeping my end of the deal :deal: and will be hosting a Left Behind discussion in November, or once we finish our upgrade of our VBulletin software.... (ooh! is that a loophole???)

This also includes listening to the audio book. :noid:

I have offered to make it complete by watching the movie if we get one more subscriber so this is Bob Jenkins' opportunity to really get even with me for all the jabs I got on him in the past... or anyone else for that matter.......

For those of you who don't know yet why this is so funny.... I am a preterist. I gave away my Left Behind series ages ago. I have an aversion for charts and gaps and 666 tatooes and particularly Cobra helicopters.

This should be good...except I have never read LB and wouldn't be seen dead coming out of a shop with a copy

This has overtones of Jephthah's vow to it :poke:

Oh, btw, here's a chart.

A preterist? OOOOooooOOOh! How evil!

(BTW, I fall more in line with historicism, but I'm glad I don't really have to worry about it. The end times will take care of themselves.)

Larkin makes me vomit; LaHaye likes to cuddle with porcupines, and Jenkins does naughty things with metalic bugs that speak Greek and Hebrew.

dizzle
October 23rd 2003, 06:51 PM
Well I got the book. :sigh: I feel like all of my will to live has been sucked out of me.

The library found the tapes for me at another branch, and I have a week to pick it up.

I felt like I was getting caught buying some embarassing personal hygiene item, and like I had to explain...... "I lost a bet."

Now before anyone gets all upset.... LaHaye is a fine Christian brother, this is all in jest and not meant to say anything bad or evil or defamatory about him.

Stephen
October 23rd 2003, 07:00 PM
Hey, the books aren't that bad...

eschatologywise; probably pretty far out there, but if you just take it as another peice of fiction, they can be a good way to wast...spend a few weeks.

TCapp
October 24th 2003, 04:07 AM
Truth be told, I thought the books were better than the movies. While I'm not a big fan anymore, I will admit to being miffed that the movie butchered the plot as depicted in the book.

(The funniest part in the movie is to see all those flags in front of the supposed U.N. building.... yeah, all those flags of different "countries" of the world...) :lmbo:

Hey, the books aren't that bad...

I wholeheartedly disagree. They are terrible. As a page-turner, if that is all you want, they will do just fine if you have a bad memory. However, if you don't want the same basic story, and the same basic conflict repeated eleven times, realize that if you have read the first book, you have read them all. By the time LaHaye and Jenkins get around to The Mark they are beginning to realize that they are running out of material. Technically (in a literary sense), The Mark is their best book. However, by the time I got to it, I was so bored with the incessant repetition of the series that I was finished.

And just to be twisted, I decided to open a hard-bound copy of Armaggedon. I happened to open to a passage where a major character dies (because they have to kill off a major character in every book). So, I know on what page a certain character dies, and that makes me happy.

Stephen
October 24th 2003, 10:31 AM
I"ve read all the books so far (one month I was just on a reading spree and they were in my church library so I"d get two a week)

I agree that as a series, they get boring, but by the time you get up to the Remnant, you've been reading so long you forget what was in books 1-4, so you miss the repetition.

Covenanter
October 24th 2003, 05:41 PM
... that I have not held a single LB book in my hand, let alone opened one. I did however look to see where they were in a Christian book shop. High up in a "FICTION" rack.

They could be a very good series to take trecking. You can use the pages as you tear them out ...

$cirisme
October 24th 2003, 05:51 PM
I've read them all. I reread them all earlier but have already forgotten what happened as there are far too many people to keep up with. :hrm:

THe UK "Fellowship of Independent Evangelical Churches" issued a warning/review of the series:

http://www.fiec.org.uk/cgi-bin/website.pl?cs=main&ctx=contentItem&cc=3750!Theological+Team&ci=0925!basic!Issue+No.+9:+Left+Behind.xml&act=viewContentItem

It begins:
"This edition of Table Talk gives a very simple introduction to the Left Behind phenomenon. But take note and remember, dear pastor / church leader, that however far-fetched what follows may appear to you, it is highly likely that numbers of your church members are aware of, interested in, or even addicted to Left Behind."

Has any US association of churches or denomination issued a similar warning? I read somewhere that LaHaye et al were churning out Left Behind books & videos like popcorn  only popcorn has more substance ... :lmbo:

Let me just say this...

Our local pagan (oops, "new age") bookstores sell books on how to read tarot cards, chakras, crystal balls, tea leaves, etc. Right next to them are books on how to "Release your inner Goddess" and how to invoke "nature spirits". Right next to them are countless instructional books on practicing "ancient" witchcraft, how to cast spells, and proper worship of the gods and/or the goddess.

And what do I find right smack in the middle of them? You get three guesses but you'll only need one...

Tim LaHaye/ Jerry Jenkins - Left Behind (the entire available set)

Spooky to me.....

And please don't ask "What were you doing there in the first place?"
