It's only a matter of time then.. after 20 odd years of doing this, I can safely say that there will be at least ONE time when you will kick yourself for not doing it..

yup. i keep copies of working and stored files. Fortunately it is not too muc - about 20 floppies with zipfiles on them. there are things I can't store, like pdf files cos they don't zip very well, but i can refind them on the internet.

I'm guessing it's quite a bit since they don't have the price in big bold letters at the top of the screen :shifty:

heh. if you have a CD-RW drive, it is actually easy to back-up... inexpensive too.

what i do is this:
Locate all the stuff you want to save. E.g. document files, game saves, etc. Don't bother with applications, mp3's (that you have legally, hint hint), or anything else that would be easy to reinstall or copy or download after a critical crash. We are mainly concerned with stuff that would have to be rewritten or otherwise would be hard to replace.

Make a new folder (it can be named anything, but i named it "archive"). I recommend it be in C:, not in "My Documents"... in fact i wouldn't put anything private in My Documents, as it is a target for hackers and malicious viruses.

In the archive folder, put a copy of all the stuff you want to save. This can actually be helpful in case you mess something up, you'll have an older copy of the file handy.

If it excedes the amount of space you can save to a CD (i think it is 65MB to 80, depending on CD), use a data compressor like WinZIP or whatever, and make a copy of the whole archive folder in a .zip file. it matters little where you save the .zip, so long as you know where it is (i don't recommend puting it in the archive folder, unless you plan to delete it before next time you do a backup.

fire up you burning program, put in a blank CD (R or RW, i don't think it matters), and copy the archive file or the .zip file to the CD.

Bam! you have yourself a decent back up of sensitive files for a cheap price. just make sure you test the CD when your done to make sure it is readable.

Either that, or you can't buy it direct from Linksys. Most likely they don't show a price because the companies that resell them don't have a fixed price they sell the drive for.

Pricegrabber (http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_attrib.php?page_id=11&form_keyword=linksys+network+storage&ut=446672846a2fb715) shows that they are a tad pricey tho:

80gig - $450
120gig - $645

You can buy a 120Gb HDD for a little over a 100 bills put it in a USB 2.0/IEEE 1394 external enclosure and just use a backup utility and save near $500

This is probably the best way to go for most people now days.. it's relatively inexpensive, and rarely fails. Also, with MB's doing the RAID thing nowdays, you can even opt to make the system pretty redundant withn itself, without even having to worry about backups that much.

Still, it's always a good idea to have an off-site backup if you do things that are really important, but even then, buying a new IDE drive (can get a 40 gig for $60) and doing an image to keep at yer moms or something, isn't out of the question.

And anyway, purple or blue are bad colors for HD's.. Forest Green is much healthier, and can get you 4 or 5 more revolutions per disk cross country :teeth:

Well, I personally would recommend that it was in Macintosh HD and not c:

 even less of a target then.

Even with all my files that would need to be backed up all in one folder, I still have a ton of backup work to do. Last time I checked it had 5gigs of files sitting in it.

i just use an external HDD for backups which with a flip of the switch shuts it off and hackers can do very little even if they manage to break past my hardware and software firewalls.

With the speed of USB 2.0 it takes on time at all.

Plus if you are stuck having to reformat due to virus or owning a Windows OS it don't matter what folder you have it in, in C:/ it is all going bye-bye.

I've never had a backup of anything in my life, but I"ve got a network of computers and I'd just copy anything important, move it to a computer with a big hard drive, and you've got yourself a backup.

Don't have a free harddrive? Just go out and get one of those 120 gig fire-wire HD's from FRY's or some other cheap electronic store.

Don't have multiple computers? :haha:

I have a bunch of computers on my HAN... each drive has an "AJ's stuff" folder. Since I have 3 harddrives in my 2k box, 2 in my Linux box, and a ton of scuzzi drives in my XP + 3 or 4 partitions on each... it makes things complex :noid:

I really need to get a program to sync all these folders together

rebates are God's gift to electronics shoppers. i got a 50 pack of CD-R's for $5 after rebate. Also a CD-RW drive for $25 after rebate. I saw a nice 80Gig HD that had a nice rebate, but i had to resist the temptation.
