Does anybody here at Tweb have or is close to someone who has dyslexia?
If so, do you have any idea what the signs of it are in early childhood? I read an article in Time magazine a while back which talked about catching it very early, like Kindergarten or 1st grade, but I can't remember clearly what it was to look for in young children.
Also, if so, could you provide me with some links to some really good websites to get more information about dyslexia? Thank you!

I have dyslexia, but I had to find out myself. In my time (grandma queen  ) they didn't look much into it.

Results of my dyslexia:

I often confuse letters like b and d, either when reading or when writing, or they sometimes read (or write) words like “rat” for “tar,” or “won” for “now.” (found on english page...I recognize this so well!!)

I read words wrong

I read very slowly and hesitantly out loud. The experts say that who reads without fluency, word by word, or who constantly loses his place, thereby leaving out whole chunks or reading the same passage twice, has a reading problem. I have that problem.

With spelling a word I sometimes say the wrong word.
For example, he may sound the letters “c-a-t” but then say “cold.”

I write the letters of a word in the wrong order. very confusing or I write certain parts of sentences in the wrong order.

I switch left and right sides....I say "right" but I mean "left" and visa versa....It is very confusing when I try to give someone directions......during driving...Like: left....no right.....uh....left....

I have to read many things twice and I can't remember quotes I love. I need to write them down. I just forget.

I am gad I can type. I have a terrible handwriting.....

My dad has Dyslexia, albeit never officially diagnosed. He says letters or words move around on the page and he has to concentrate really hard to read. He says sometimes they crawl like ants. He doesn't read for pleasure at all.

Yikes, Queen! My 10 year old does that.

I know of a lady who can only drive herself places that she has been to a zillion times. She can go absolutely NOwhere new on her own or she gets completely lost. Until I met her, I didn't realize dyslexia had an impact on one's sense of direction.

That's so sad, Paul. He must've had a horrible time in school.

Yeah, he did. Especially since they didn't know how to treat such problems when he was in school. He taught himself to read, I think maybe from the Odessy.

I was diagnosed with dyslexia at 4yrs. I remember asking my mother in the store to buy me some glasses so I could see the "right" way. I would see and write everyting exactly backwards.

Thankfully, it only lasted a few weeks and has never returned. I think there are many children who have this temporarily so if you see signs don't get too concerned. I ended up valedictorian of my kindergarten class! (yes, they has a ceremony and everything where I had to read a book about ducks)

In my case, I think it may have had to do with my brain hemispheres duking it out for control since I'm a lefty. When the brain is still forming its initial connections, all kinds of weird stuff can happen.

ps yeah mom! for not putting me in a "special" school like the doc suggested.

I have a small degree of dyslexia with numbers. I usually have to dial phones very carefully, and even then I sometimes have to redial.

I have it mildly too ... with numbers mainly. If I write them down, I can carefully read them back to someone one number at a time, but I find I have to make sure that I have the person repeat them at least once more. On my job, I take credit card numbers, policy numbers, and check microline numbers ... so this could be potentially a bother, except they have failsafes in place to read them at least twice to the person, so I am pretty much covered against mistakes.

Rubia:You can go to www.3dlearner.com. It is a website specifically dedicated to dyslexia. After reading the information, they have an on-line assessment that will give you insight into your child's strengths and issue.
