View Full Version : Resources on the US political process

While I have a sufficient knowledge of the US political process to follow major policy debates, I have no formal training in this field. This results in the occasional situation where I do not understand the mechanics or motivation behind a particular legislative action. The other problem with piecemeal knowledge garnered over the years is that it's difficult to know the full extent of your ignorance.

Therefore, I am looking for someone to recommend resources that cover the legislative structure and process (to take but one example: how committees in the Senate are formed, how their members are chosen, and how they influence what legislation reaches the floor) in substantial, if not exhaustive, detail. I realize I'll probably read a good deal of material I already know, but without working through something exhaustive, I won't feel satisfied with my current level of knowledge.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Either book or online resources are fine.
