Warning: Sentimentality alert, suggest those without kids steel themselves

Parent

Before you even knew you were
I knew you were with me
And watched your heart beat white on black
On that small TV screen

I can’t pretend there wasn’t shock
But baby, understand
That who you are is pretty much
Impossible to plan

Yes, I screwed up a hundred times
So when I turn and say
“You’re better steering clear of that,”
Some distant, dreaded day

When you’ve outgrown more childish games
And want to stretch your wings
It truly is experience
That makes me say these things

I’ll set you free, because I must
But know this in your heart
I love you more than life itself
And have done from the start.

There seems to be a conflict between "I can't plan who you should be, so excuse me when I seem overbearing" and "I speak from experience, so listen to what I say". Is this intentional, unintentional, or did I misunderstand something?
