View Full Version : Are your religious and political tendencies affected by your personality?

I'm performing a study to answer a question and I would greatly appreciate your time and participation. The question is:
Is there a definitive correlation between your personality type and where you place your faith in regards to both religion and politics?
The idea behind this is that certain personality traits (Compassion, being a "thinker", extroverts, etc.) tend to follow a certain group that may or may not be definable by their personality traits as a whole. I'm exploring the possibility that they may actually be defineable in such a way.
I don't know that the data collected will give us the difinitive answer I am looking for, but I want to document trends and tendencies. Maybe, if the margin of error is small enough, I'll discover something interesting.
A few guidelines:
1) "Personality type" is the terminology I use. I will use the Jung/Myers-Briggs test (which rates 4 aspects of personality). Essentially it measure how on perceive's the world and reacts to it. It is based on theory, and is a fair method of determination. The test has has a resulting 16 possible psychological types. The 16 different types are often referred to by an abbreviation of four letters, the initial letters of each of their four type preferences (except in the case of iNtuition).
2) I do not intend for this to be a discussion or debate thread, just for data compilation. That is not to mean I discourage discussion, but, I do encourage cessation until a fair data set has been acquired. I'm hoping for 100+ from tWeb, and I will see about other sources.
Here is the link to the test we will use. It is somewhat lengthy (easy questions though), and has some refer advertising but the site is safe and adware free. Please try to answer as honestly as possible. The more times the test is taken, the more accurate it will be (trending that is) but if you're completely honest the first time, once should do it.
LINK http://similarminds.com/jung.html
(I have taken the appropriate steps to notify the site master of this study.)
Directions :
1) Take the test. If you already know your type, proceed past this step.
2) Reply to this thread with the personality type results, followed by your current religious preference, your political alignment (not party) and if you would, your reaction to the results. If you're on the fence about either religion or politics, please state such and identify what you tend toward.
This way, everyone has answered the exact same questions with the same possible answers.
Thank you very much for your contribution and time.
I'll start:
I tested ESFP
I am a Christian
I tend toward Conservativism
The test pretty accurately summarized how I perceive and react.

no political interest at all. I care how how the church is run but have little interest in secular government and how different countries govern themselves. BTW I haven't lived in my home country for 15 years so have very little interest in the secular government there and even less interest elsewhere.

-I'm an INFJ
-Christian - non denominational
-I tend to be on the conservative end on some issues and the liberal on the other. All depends on what side I think has the more valid outlook at the time.
-I've always found this test pretty accurate, I usually tend to test INFJ and sometimes INTJ depending on my mood at that time.

Openness
This trait refers to the extent to which you prefer novelty versus convention. Approximately 16% of respondents have a lower openness raw percentage than yours. From the way you answered the questions, you seem to describe yourself as someone who is down-to-earth and prefers things to be simple and straightforwards. You might say that it just makes life easier if things don't change unnecessarily, that the arts are of no practical use to you, and that you think tradition is more important than others do.
Reflective question: How do you react to change?
Facets
(O1) Imagination: 84.1st percentile. This facet includes your imagination and fantasy life. Daydreams are for you a regular occurance. Your mind creates other idealised realities. It can be difficult to bring your thoughts back to what you are meant to be doing.
(O2) Artistic Interests: 30.8th percentile. This facet includes your interest in art, music and nature. You are less sensitive to beauty than some. Generally you may appreciate things for their material value rather than their aesthetic. Nevertheless, all else being equal, you would still prefer things to look nice too.
(O3) Emotionality: 61.8th percentile. This facet includes your experience of emotion and feelings. You experience your emotions more intensely than other people seem to. This may lead you to spend time reflecting to try and understand yourself. You may consider charitable causes to be especially important because of their emotional pull on you.
(O4) Adventurousness: 3.5th percentile. This facet includes your openness to new experiences. You prefer more than most to do activities that you have done before and know that you enjoy. You may be resistant to trying new things, such as eating new foods or going to new places. You may describe yourself as a creature of habit.
(O5) Intellect: 91.9th percentile. This facet includes your openness to new ideas. You are much more intellectually curious than most. You are interested in a range of unconventional ideas which you pursue for your own enjoyment rather than any material benefit.
(O6) Liberalism: 30.8th percentile. This facet includes your openness to values. Your values are more conservative than average. Generally you see no need to re-examine the values of honoured tradition, although there may be one or two areas that you feel need to be liberalised.

Conscientiousness
This trait refers to the extent to which you prefer an organised, or a flexible, approach in life. Approximately 69.2% of respondents have a lower conscientiousness raw percentage than yours. From the way you answered the questions, you seem to describe yourself as someone who avoids foreseeable trouble through purposefully planning, and achieves success through persistence. From your responses it appears that you are reliable and prepared for life's challenges.
Reflective question: How do you feel when you are working with someone who is disorganised?
Facets
(C1) Self-Efficacy: 65.5th percentile. This facet refers to your ability to 'get things done'. You consider yourself prepared to deal with life's challenges successfully. You excel in what you do, and are also capable of smoothly attempting unfamiliar tasks.

You work very hard to achieve success and are highly motivated. It may be that you neglect other aspects of your life.
(C5) Self-Discipline: 88.5th percentile. This facet includes your motivation to start and complete tasks. Importantly it is distinct from impulsiveness, which measures the impulse to do things that you do not want to do, whereas this facet measures your tendency to not do things that you do want to do.You are very motivated to complete the things that you plan and want to do. You rarely waste time on frivolous endeavours or get distracted, no matter how boring or repititive something is.
(C6) Cautiousness: 94.5th percentile. This facet includes the extent to which you think before acting. You spend more time than most thinking through your actions and their possible consequences before you say or do anything. (E5) Excitement-Seeking: 8th percentile. This facet includes how much excitement you enjoy in your life. You do not enjoy lots of thrills and mindless recklessness. You are far more likely than is typical to make time to help others, even at the expense of your personal material welfare, because you just enjoy doing it even when you get nothing directly in return.
(A4) Co-operation: 78.8th percentile. This facet describes how you work with others. You are more likely to defer to others rather than risk a confrontation by saying what you think, unless it is important enough to you. You tend to forgive rather than hold a grudge. (N4) Self-Consciousness: 65.5th percentile. This facet measures negative feelings caused by being around others. You feel less confident than most in social situations.
