I have been having problems with my sound, I haven't been able to get it to work, but I can hear stuff like when it's connecting me to the Internet, so I know it's working. I think I've finally figured out that it's the sound control program that's missing, and since it's muted I can't turn it up without the program, which somehow isn't there. Is there anyplace I could download that program without having to totally redownload Windows?

My bet is it is just hidden. If you go to Control Panel, it should have your sound control listed there.

Nope.... I already tried that...

could be faulty drivers, not set on the correct audio device, etc. etc. ... hard to diagnose from a distance :frown:

Do you have TweakUI?

My sound used to work, but then I muted the sound because at the time I was hanging out on this site a lot that had the most horrible music, and now I can't find the program. I'm really a ditz when it comes to computers, but both my uncle and brother say it's the sound control program that I need, neither of them know where to find it except redownloading Windows.

cirisme:

I don't even know what that is, so I'm guessing no...

Start->(All) Programs->Accessories->Entertainment->Volume Control.

Mess with it and see if you get sound. If not, then read on:

Is this Windows XP?

Go to your control panel, and if you're using XP switch to classic view. 1, is there any icon for "TweakUI"? 2, Goto System->Device Manager(varies. WindowsXP has it as a button, I think 98, etc has it as a tab)

Expand Sound, video and game controllers, then open the properties for Audio Codecs. In the properties tab, you should see a bunch of file names. Are there any? Try selecting one and click properties. Is it enabled? If not, try again. If most of them are disabled you may need to simply enable them.

So, is there any place to get the sound control program without reloading Windows entirely?

I get the volume control icon when I go through the start menu, but nothing comes up when I click on it. When I try to find it with the search on the start menu, it doesn't come up.

BTW, I have Windows 98

What happens when you right click on it and click advanced?

There is no advanced option on the right-click menu...

Okay, what options do you have?

Sheepdog
November 20th 2003, 06:19 PM
try this:

in the start menu, click on "Run..." or "Run Program" or whatever. a box will come up, you type in sndvol32.exe and it "Ok"

if that don't work, try again, but with sndvol.exe instead.

if both fail, in the start menu click on "Search" or equivalent. try "sndvol" in the serch field. if all else fails, type in "volume" and look for a short cut named "Volume Control" or something similar.

if all else fails, take your computer, and throw it out the window.

Sndvol is already running though :shifty:

if it is running, it should have an icon on the taskbar by the time.

or is Win98 that jacked up?

Here's a screenshot of the options I have... I don't see anything that will help. Clicking open doesn't do anything.

Oh, I thought the icon appeared in the taskbar, which is why I asked. When you open it, does an icon appear near the clock? It looks like a speaker.

Nope... absolutely nothing happens. I get the hourglass for a few seconds, then nothing.

How did you mute it originally?

LeiLani

By bringing up the menu from the toolbar, which has since mysteriously vanished...

Thanx by the way for helping me... it must be annoying to have to put up with ditzes like me... :teeth: :lei:

Would it work if I just went on a file-sharing program and got it there? What program would I be looking for?

So.... you clicked on the speaker icon and clicked mute? Or was this some other program?

I just want to be clear on how you muted it in the first place.

LeiLani:

No problem. I know how troubling computer problems can be, remember that I deleted 1,100 smilies with the click of a button.

Not really, I deal with DDW all the time  :brow:

j/k, ddw :noid:

No, it really sounds like it's more of a configuration issue than anything.

I clicked on the icon by the clock, and a menu thing came up with slidey things (using the most technical of terms :teeth) to adjust the volume. There was a check box to mute it, and I checked that box.

Okay

I searched for sndvol32, and an application came up, but I couldn't open it...

naw. what is really annoying is putting up with Windoze problems like this aparently is. like i keep saying, if Microsoft made a new light bulb, darkness would be the industry standard.

Erm... is this the part where I throw my computer out the window?

1. Click the Start button, then go to settings and click control panel.

2. Go to Add/Remove programs and click on the Windows Setup tab.

3. Double click on Multimedia and see if Volume Control is checked.
a) if not, check it, click OK, then click apply
b) if so, uncheck it, click OK, click apply, then follow steps 1, 2, and 3a.

I don't know exactly what the problem is, but hopefully this will help.

Dang... it says that the volume control program is missing... so I guess I need to redownload it. This computer came with Windows, so I don't have a disk. Would it be possible to download it from a file-sharing program?

You could probably find it on Microsoft's website. Other than that I'm out of ideas.
