View Full Version : "The Milk from Contented Cows"

We recently watched old episodes of The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show. The show was sponsored by Carnation. About every 3 - 4 minutes there was some reference to Carnation evaporated milk.
By the time we were finished with the dvd I felt compelled to see if the claims were true, mainly if I could make whipped cream with it. Sure enough! We picked some up at the store, chilled the milk, mixing bowl and beaters and it whipped quite nicely (for such an underpowered mixer). I was leary of over whipping it and having it turn to butter on me - I just bought a ton of butter and really preferred the whipped cream to more butter - so I think I didn't whip it long enough.
I think "Carnation Evaporated Milk, The Milk From Contented Cows" may be cheaper than buying cream, if anyone else is interested in making their own whipped cream. It's definitely cheaper than Cool Whip. With the right flavoring, I think it could also be a whole lot cheaper than flavored creamers for coffee and tea. I don't drink that stuff much (especially not coffee, YUCK) so I don't know if I'd know the difference between name brand and homemade flavored creamer.

OK OK, I couldn't resist.
I don't have anything of substance to add here. I don't do much cream or milk unless it's non-fat. Such pleasures as that and homemade Ice Cream are things I have to shun, unless I want to blimp-up like Delta Burke.

I have a really, really good recipe for lemon cheesecake that my sis brought back from New Zealand that calls for whipped evaporated milk. If you want it, let me know and I will post it.

Gracie came home from visiting a friend at the hospital. She was carrying a huge bouquet. George asked her what she was doing with all those flowers.
"Well, George, you said I should take her flowers, so when she wasn't looking... I did!"

:lmbo: That's in one of the episodes on the dvd we watched. If any statement could be taken in a way other than intended, Gracie could do it.

New Zealand Cheese Cake
3 c. graham wafer crumbs 1/2 c. sugar
1/4 c. lemon juice 1 pkg. (3 oz.) lemon jello
8 oz. cream cheese 6 oz. butter (3/4 c.)
1 can evap. milk
Chill evap. milk, bowl and beaters.
Make two 8 inch square crusts from the graham crumbs and butter (melt butter, I guess, or just soften it, whichever works best.....I haven't made this for a really long time.....). Set in fridge.
Make jello with 1 c. boiling water. Set aside until partially set. You want it to be still sort of soft...not totally set. Beat milk until thick and add lemon juice. Beat cheese and sugar until soft and well mixed, and add to the thickened milk. Add partially set jello. Beat all together, pour into crusts, and chill.
I would make the two cheesecakes, and freeze one. It lasts pretty well for quite a while in the freezer, and another advantage is that it is a no-bake recipe.
Maybe you could make one large 13 x 9 pan if you had a crowd to feed...worth a try.

Yes, Gracie was so wonderful. She always had such a serious mannerism while delivering those absurd and hilarious lines.
I understand she was a lovely person in real life as well and everyone adored her.
Her untimely death led George to withdraw for many years, not until the Sunshine Boys did he work again.

What? No vegemite?
(I wanted to add, too, that there is no reason to buy the cow when the milk is on the shelf.. err.. uhh...)

I am not certain, but you are probably thinking of Australia.
If you would like to ask my brother-in-law, who is a New Zealander, I am sure he would carefully explain to you that Australia and NZ are two completely different places, and one has nothing to do with the other........
AFTER he punches you in the nose for insinuating that NZ and Oz are one and the same.......

The few N.Zealanders I've known LOVE Vegemite.

HR, I had heard that about Gracie too. How did she die?
Thanks for the recipe, Rosey Posey. I'm especially excited to see that there are no eggs in it!! Yay!!!

Why? Eggs are good for you, one of the most easily-digestable proteins in nature.

Some people are allergic to eggs and items that contain eggs.

I work with a New Zeelander who knew exactly what Vegemite was, and that she's actually eaten it. (Once)

Well, the N.Zealanders I'd met knew all about it and ate it frequently; they gave me the impression it is common there.

They're not good for me. They turn me inside out in a matter of seconds. I can hardly even touch the things without my skin starting to burn and itch. I am highly allergic to eggs. I can eat them in small, diluted quantities like in cream or jelly filled donuts - which I can have now and then (with a minor reaction, because it's only in the dough and there's less of it) but the higher concentrations as in meatloaf, some pasta, cake, quick breads and cookies, in which there is less of a "buffer", make me really sick. Eating eggs on their own like scrambled or in things like egg nog, custard, most cold "potluck" type salads (potato and others), Miracle Whip or mayo or in some sports drink mixes would put me out of commission for several hours. Nothing I've tried eases the pain. It takes me about 24 hours to shake the total impact of the eggs. If I am making a cake for someone and happen to push my bangs out of my eyes or something and get any of the raw egg on my face, my face, scalp, ears and neck break out in itchies not unlike hives and it takes a good week to get back to normal. Thankfully I don't have as severe of a reaction when I get it on my hands.
And then there's chicken, turkey and all of their forms. *sigh*
All of that to say that eggs are not one of the most easily digestable sources of protein from nature - for me.
