Just an aid to an upcoming debate on the contraceptive mandate.
Private Insurer/Insurance: A privately held company which sells insurance; insurance sold by such a company.
Private Payer: A non-governmental entity which provides payment. Usually refers to individuals but can refer to groups. Generally, a private individual or corporation who makes payment.
Public Insurer/Insurance: Governmental insurance agencies; Insurance provided by government. In the US the Federal programs are Medicaid (for the impoverished) and Medicare (for the elderly).
Provider: Can refer either to the insurer or to the entity doing the service. An insurer is an insurance provider; a doctor is a healthcare provider.
