Kicking Some Left Behind: Part six of the butt-whupping with a nice kick in the teeth (http://www.preteristpodcast.com/index.php/2012/03/17/kicking-some-left-behind-part-6-a-kick-in-the-teeth/)
Brief Summary: This is part six of a somewhat humourous critique that I will be doing on the audio version of Left Behindby Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins. This episode is guest-hosted by Chris "Chim Chim Chi-Boooo" Date.

Making fun of fellow believers.
Terrific pastime.

So fellow believers get a free pass when they produce an abysmally bad piece of writing? That is not only bad writing and an embarrassment to writing talent but borderline heretical theology? Seriously?
And no, I am not calling the Rapture heresy. But in reviewing these books, their doctrine of resurrection is borderline, if not outright, heretical, as presented in the book. Now, I chalk that up to, not the personal beliefs of the authors, but their terrible skills as writers.
Fellow believers do not get free passes when they have gotten fat and rich off of things that make the rest of us a laughingstock.
have you actually listened to ANY of the series? or just pre-judging? You might want to check the minority report first.

Just finished listening to it - two thumbs up to Mr. Date. It certainly wasn't a kick in the teeth.
Back in my dispy days when I read Left Behind with enthusiasm, I always knew that the books were badly written. But somehow the moral repugnance of the main characters was never noticed until I started listening to this series.

I agree with you that the writing is bad. And I agree with you that they just kept cranking the books out.
However, your op didn't mention the poor writing. It sounds as if you are simply making fun of the theology. And unless you are going to be clear, then you are also going to be criticized. Or do you expect a free ride when you also don't express yourself properly....
No, I haven't listened to the poscasts, and I don't intend to waste my time doing so. Call that prejudging if you wish, I simply don't care.

I expect Christians to make INFORMED criticisms -- or is blithely criticizing fellow believers the new pastime? Terrific.

That's what you do. I am not allowed to criticize you, then.
Fine. Have it your way. Just know that you are not making any better case for your preterist argument by mocking other believers. And it's a terrible testimony, too.

Mossrose, you admitted to criticizing dizzle on grounds you were forced to admit were irrelevant. That's not informed criticism.

I don't have to buy a Penthouse to know that pornography is wrong. Same thing here. I am sure the podcasts are quite entertaining to those who care. But they do nothing to promote the case of preterism and they are simply there to mock those who are futurists.

Have you still not listened to the podcast? Are you still handing out uninformed condemnations? They expose the shoddy writing and terrible characters of the series AND talk about how LaHaye and Jenkins got scriptural interpretation wrong.

Are you claiming I am making uninformed criticisms? That is the only way your comment makes sense, but if that is what are claiming, how can you know that since you have no idea what is said.
I have people write me otherwise to your assertion of in effectiveness. Plus it is Scripture that convinces not emotional and unbiblical kneejerk reactions that dare to compare the work of a fellow believer to pornography. Nice witness.

Actually, given what Tim Lahaye and co. have said about Orthodox Preterism (and what some Dispensationalists have said about Orthodox Preterists), making fun of Left Behind's poor quality and pointing out some of their genuine theological blunders is actually quite tame in comparison.
Aside from Lahaye (as well as Thomas Ice and several others) calling Preterism 'liberal' and other such buzzwords (if memory serves- I'm going by what was said in the podcast- in the book he and Jenkins imply that Dispensationalism is "What the Bible Teaches" via one of his Christian characters), I've actually had a Dispensationalist say that the Spirit was not dwelling within me because I was a Preterist; that I was effectively damned because of my particular theological slant. It could be said that he was mixing up Orthodox Preterism with Hyper-Preterism, but the problem is that before he said that statement I made extra sure to differentiate between the two and blatantly indicate that I was clearly of the Orthodox variety.
I don't mind if someone is a Futurist. Heck, I don't even mind if they enjoy the Left Behind Series. I do, however, mind when I can't even voice a different- and completely orthodox- view without being unfairly called anathema to the very Gospel I adhere to.
