(I'm preaching this sermon this Sunday..im not a pastor..just a Bible school graduate visiting my fiancee in the Philippines and got asked to preach about hope..thought I'd share it with you. Pardon the Filipino expressions. And it's my first time here so I just had to share something..hehe Hope reveals more to you the kind of hope we can have in Christ. God bless..)

Romans 5:1-5
What is "hope"? Many times when we use the word hope we say, "I hope so".

There are two different definitions for hope but just one used here in the scripture.

One definition of hope is "to wish", "to cling to ones desires despite the unlikelihood of their being fulfilled."

"Sana nga" - wishful thinking

The other definition and the Greek definition for the way it is used in the Bible is, "to be intensely expectant, to be confidently looking forward to something you fully expect to happen."

"Pag-asa" - hope

Because of hope we can have a reason to rejoice.

-"in the hope of the glory of God" and..
-"in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance character; and character, hope."(v. 2-4)

The Hope of Salvation

Pay attention when you see the words "we have" or "we have been" in the Bible.

WE HAVE BEEN JUSTIFIED through faith
WE HAVE PEACE WITH GOD through Jesus Christ
WE HAVE GAINED ACCESS INTO HIS GRACE

Peter refers to our salvation as a hope. "Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have."

Our salvation is not a "wishful thinking" or "(sana-nga) type of hope.
It is not hope that it will take place but "waiting patiently in hope" for the reality of it to manifest.

You see, we ARE saved. Yet it is still described as the hope of salvation.
"It is by grace YOU HAVE BEEN saved." It is the (pag-asa) hope we have.

We can have the same hope of salvation as we can in all the other promises of God.

The Example of Abraham - Hebrews 6:13-15-19

Abraham waited "patiently". Not waiting "nervously". He had (pag-asa) not other sana nga)..

"We have this hope (pag-asa) as an anchor for the soul."

What is an anchor? Something that holds something in place.

Romans 4:18-22

Against all hope (sana nga) Abraham in hope (pag-asa).

If you don’t hear anything else I say, hear this
WE MUST DWELL ON WHAT GOD SAYS ABOUT US AND OUR CIRCUMSTANCES RATHER THAT HOW WE FEEL OR WHAT OTHERS SAY.

Reasons People Lose Hope/ What God Says

I see no way out of a situation.
-God says, “...in all things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” (Rom. 8:37)

-God says, “trust the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight” (Pro. 3:5-6)

I’m too depressed
-God says, “I heal the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” (Ps. 147:3)
-God says, “joy comes in the morning”

My trial is too hard
-God says, “consider it joy…when you face many trials…because testing develops perseverance...” (Jas. 1:2)

I’ve done too many bad things, God wont forgive me
-God says, “you ARE justified” (Rom. 1:5)
-God says, “I forgive ALL your sins...” (Ps. 103:3)

I’m too sick
-God says, “by my stripes you ARE healed” (Isa. 53:5)
-God says, “I heal ALL your diseases” (Ps. 103:3)

I’m too scared (or) I feel alone
-God says, “never will I leave you; never will I forsake you. So we can say ‘the Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?’” (Heb. 13:5-6)
-God says, “when you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you.” (Isa. 43:2)

The temptation is too hard
-God says, “no temptation has seized you but that which is common to man…I will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear…I will always provide a way of escape” (1 Cor. 10:13)

My situation seems impossible to overcome
-God says, “I can move mountains” (Mt. 17:20)

God doesn’t love me
-God says, “I have loved you with an everlasting love” (Jer. 31:3)
-God says, “NOTHING can separate you from my love” (Rom. 8:39)
-God says, “before you were servants not I call you friends” (Jn 15:5)

No hopeless situation, only people who think they are without hope..

CONCLUSION
What is the devil, the world, others, and your thoughts, saying about you and the things you are going through. About the situations in your life.

What does God say?

Put your Hope in God

Hope is to me........a reason to live. Because I have hope I am still here and sisn't end my life when I held that knife against my wrist. Something touched me........Hope, hope that someday I will see that I am worth being loved.
