View Full Version : Funky Church Names

Anyone know of any funky or just plain bizarre church names in your community? There's quite a few really strange ones around where I live:

The Rev. Willie Sizemore's Gospel Holiness Chapel
(Rev. Sizemore has some lovely gold teeth, gold jewelry and gold accessories for his Infiniti Q45. I know this because I sold him most of the gold accessories for said Q45.)

Salvation Church of the Reformed Gospel (Pentecostal Holiness)

Beaver United Methodist (Beaver, WV)

Possum Grove Bible Believers Baptist Church (Odd, WV)

I'm sure some of the names down South are pretty funny.

"Druid Hills Baptist Church" (Atlanta) always struck me as a funny name. (I understand it's a fine church!)

Ebenezer (while certainly a funny name) is actually a Biblical reference:

1 Samuel 7:12 (NIV)
"Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer, [ 7:12 [ Ebenezer ] means [ stone of help. ] ] saying, "Thus far has the LORD helped us."

But yeah I still think of Ebenezer Scrooge too.

On the way to my grandmothers house I always pass Gay Valley Baptist Church.

:hrm:

/ot Is it just me or does the longer the church name, the smaller the church ex. Apostolic Holiness Church of the Devine Annointed Appostle of Christ in Glory has about 20 members.

When the church was named most likely "gay" meant happy. The phenomenon of the very long name, very few members seems interesting as well. I think Rev. Willie's flock is primarily elderly widows who sign over their pension checks and eat catfood so he can have gold teeth and 20" gold rims on his 'Q, but I also think he probably graduated from the PT Barnum School of Divinity...

QUESTION:
"1 Timothy 2:15 speaks of women being saved through childbirth. What salvation is this referring too? Contractually speaking, there is only one way to be saved (Acts 2:38), so our guess is that it is referring to physical salvation through genetics. Another idea is in the former verse (v. 14) it speaks of Adam and Eve. Could it be referring to Genesis 3:15 (the cross of Christ overcome Satan)? What do you think?" -- Kevin and Todd

REPLY:
The false teachers in Ephesus (to which city 1 Timothy was directed) forbad marriage. They taught, as most Gnostics in the first century believed, that celibacy was the ideal and sexuality was inferior. This comes out very clearly in 1 Timothy 4. (Just read those caustic words Paul pens about the false teachers!) I have read a few ingenious suggestions as to the true meaning of 1 Timothy 2:15. The truth is simpler: mothers will not forfeit their salvation. Marriage and sexuality and family are God's plan. They do not represent an inferior lifestyle, even for the most committed Christian. To sum up, 1 Timothy 2 is best understood in the context of the entire letter of 1 Timothy. Chapter 4 in particular gives us the clue to Paul's meaning.

^umm...no

Church of the Holy Brethren In Apostolic Unity (Charismatic) Columbus, OH
This is a very small storefront church so I'm assuming there aren't very many Holy Brethren.

Beckley Praise House (Pentecostal) Beckley WV
Not a pancake restaurant like we thought at first.

Byesville Gloryland (Pentecostal) Byesville OH
If you're looking for a theme park you're going to be disappointed. Lots of polyester, Elvis hair and white vinyl shoes.
