View Full Version : Matthew Theology vs. Paul Theology

Hello.
There was some debate in past Jabob vs. Paul case. But anybody notice that (also) Matthew is many times against Paul Theological opinions. Most scholars think that Gospel of Matthew was written after Paul letters and it is written in Jerusalem, where it holds Jewish Christian insight.

Few Examples.. where we find without doubt conflict between Matthew and Paul.

Jesus teaches in his famous Sermon of Mount:

Matt. 5:18 (KJV)
For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

Paul teaches that Christ is end of law. But Jesus said, that until heaven and earth passaway, law will not passway. We all know that heaven and earth is not yet passed away.
So, is Paul theology terrible wrong here?

Matt 5:19 (KJV)
Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach [them], the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

Paul mainly thought, that we don't need anymore keep the Mosaic laws and teach them. But Jesus clearly teaches that we must teach even least commanments to the people.

Jesus confirm this in next passages:

Matt 23:1-3 (KJV)
Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples,
Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat:
All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, [that] observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.

Matt 23:23 (KJV)
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier [matters] of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

Matt 28:20 (KJV)
Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, [even] unto the end of the world. Amen.

I reckon your premise is faulty Max.

Heaven and earth did pass away, in that the old world of daily animal sacrfices, ended.

And what Paul taught was that Phariseeism (legalism) is evil and that salvation comes through the law in the person of Christ rather than the individuals legal perfection. Part of Paul's ministry was to inaguruate the division of the 'ceremonial law' ,which applied only to pre-christian Israel, from the moral/civil law, which is international and still in force today.

To set Paul at odds with Matthew and Christ requires grossly unnatural lateral forces on the text. Paul confesses continually his status as a servant of Christ, and a servant does not supplant the wishes, orders and teachings of the master in letter or spirit.

take care

It is one thing for Matthew and Paul to be stresses different but compatible truths, and be complementing each other. It is entirely another for them to be actually contradictory.

Paul is not saying that the law will cease to exist or pass away - in the context of Romans 10 Paul is speaking about the law as a means of justification.

IMO, that is a very poor argument. One would probably do better trying to cite contradictions in James and Paul, rather than Matthew and Paul.

Blessings,
Gavin

Matt 28:20 (KJV)
Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, [even] unto the end of the world. Amen.

But what you think about that, Jesus command teach all things, even gentiles. What you understand to that "all"

The all directly refers to Jesus commands. List those commands and tell us where Paul differed with them. To be honest, you will not find Christ ever commanding anything that differed with Paul. Jesus did not command Judaism, He "replaced" it.

Matt.

Amen.
Jesus DID teach men to observe the law in his day. He commanded men to do so and the resurrection and cross never changed one single thing, nor did his ascension. The 12 apostles and Paul and his Jewish crew were all law abiding Jews.

Ezekiel 36:26-27 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.

The New Covenant is all about keeping the law, and the Acts believers knew it...
Acts 21:20 And when they heard it, they glorified the Lord, and said unto him, Thou seest, brother, how many thousands of Jews there are which believe; and they are all zealous of the law:

In that text the believing Jews are law abiding because they DO have the New Covenant. Paul takes a Jewish vow just to prove it. Even the Gentiles had to keep 4 ordinances.

If this is all truth for today, then we have a real problem...
Paul writes after Acts that the dispensation of the grace of God has NOTHING to do with law keeping, so, the New Covenant could not possibly be for us today. The blood of Christ and the Spirit? Yes. The new covenant? no.

Ephesians 3:1-2 For this cause I Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles, If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward:

Ephesians 2:11-13 Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands; That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world: But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.
Ephesians 2:14-16 For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:

And no, the heaven and earth did not pass away.
Grace,
Mike
