View Full Version : Misperception about atheists

People seem to think that atheists don't want to believe in god or a Christian God because of the limitations in morality and stuff. They think we are intimidated by it. I wanted to do a poll and see just where we stand as far god is concerned.

Although not an atheist (I'm agnostic), I voted as if I were: for heaven and such. Just because one doesn't believe a thing to be true doesn't mean they wouldn't accept it if it was.

Why did muzicman vote in an atheism poll? Is that against the rules or is muzicman coming out of the closet?

I voted for Nothing.

Eternity would suck, just look at how miserable vampires are.

I almost voted as well. The point that it is atheist only is easy to miss.

I went for nothing. I already live with an all-loving being, who is in the kitchen making me Aloo Gobi even as a type.

Jean Paul Sartre talks about what was a reality to him: that death was the end of his being. After reading him I recognize the universal dread that death inspires in every person. No one "chooses" to believe they become nothing when they die. Some just eccept it as "the all-consuming ever-present dread" that it, in fact, is.

I voted nothing, as the idea of eternity reminds me too much of Douglas Adams Hitch Hickers Guide To The Galaxy (remember the immortal alien who tries to pass eternity by insulting every sentient lifefom in the galaxy in its own tongue?

Certainly an after life of bliss would be great but this is exactly why religion exists. It is wishful thinking.

I don't think the concept of "all-loving" stands up to scrutiny. "Love" is only apparent if there is something that is not loved.

My take on many believers is that their faith makes them feel special. But not every body can be special, by definition. I think when the non-special people have been consigned to oblivion, many believers will find eternal life rather unrewarding - there will be nobody left to feel superior to.

Am I unduly cynical?

I voted for the first choice, as I presume a deity could keep me from being bored.

Thats my thinking. Plus, I am easy to please. Gilligans Island reruns alone would entertain me for several years.

Eternity as myself would be very dull. If you'd stuck reincarnation on there I might've voted for it.

But you didnt.

Eternal life with an all-loving being sounds incredibly boring. Imagine waking up every morning for the next . . . well, eternity thinking, "Same old same old." Good grief! Who'd want that?

Confucius said he wished he had more time to study the "Book of Changes": I'd like few extra millenium to study up on some interesting things !

Eternal life, of course. Keep the options open, don't burn bridges, that kind of thing.

I think the poll results are showing that disbelief is not due to fear or anger, but a basic lack of evidence.
