As of recently there have been a plague of false emails being sent under the guise and address of reputable sources. There are a few different types of these emails. All of them enclose attachments to the email. Do not open or save these attachments as these emails are not from us. We do not enclose attachments in our correspondances. We apologize for the inconvenience.

An example of such an email looks like this:

Dear user of "Theologyweb.com" mailing system,

Some of our clients complained about the spam (negative e-mail content)
outgoing from your e-mail account. Probably, you have been infected by
a proxy-relay trojan server. In order to keep your computer safe,
follow the instructions.

For details see the attached file.

Attached file protected with the password for security reasons. Password is 27447.

Sincerely,
The Theologyweb.com team http://www.theologyweb.com

Interesting. CAP Ministry just sent out a notice about false emails, too. Perhaps someone is trying to go after the "fundy" websites.

My parents got a notice from their ISP that a virus was going around and that it sent emails that looked like they came from some of the ISP's adresses. The virus is called W32.Beagle.J@MM or W32/Bagle.J@MM.

actually, i got a few claiming to be from the Michigan State University email system. same basic design as the one yx posted. i think this one is untargeted, though the design of it would certainly suggest otherwise.

No, there's no targeting going on here. If there were, you'd see the enticing email look like it was written by a real human not a computer playing ad-libs, e.g.:

"Greetings [insert user name]!
We at [insert mailing list sender's name] want to be sure you're safe. Click this friendly [insert virus name] file to avoid being duped by email viruses.

Good day and thanks for shopping at [insert mailing list sender's name],

Yes Jinx. I admit it, it was me.

Why not keep up on the latest virii instead of pointing the finger at the shadow of your former self?
