Faith is Listening and Preaching

March 15, 2004
Monday of the Third Week of Lent

Luke 4:24-30
And Jesus said, "Amen, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own native place. Indeed, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah when the sky was closed for three and a half years and a severe famine spread over the entire land. It was to none of these that Elijah was sent, but only to a widow in Zarephath in the land of Sidon. Again, there were many lepers in Israel during the time of Elisha the prophet; yet not one of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian." When the people in the synagogue heard this, they were all filled with fury. They rose up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town had been built, to hurl him down headlong. But he passed through the midst of them and went away.

Introductory Prayer: Heavenly Father, as I begin this day I commit myself to you once again. I humbly invoke you to accompany me during my prayer so that you may see how much I love you and want to become more like your son, Jesus Christ.

Petition: Father, help me to be a greater witness to your son, Jesus.

1. Listening to Wisdom. The Holy Spirit never stops preaching the Gospel. His wisdom comes to us through many mediums: the Scriptures, homilies at Mass, inspirations to virtue, the witness of a friend, or even a stranger. In today’s Gospel Christ calls to mind a few points, one of which is the importance of being open-minded and willing to learn from others. The prophets of the Old Testament were persecuted by their own people who were unwilling to listen to the messengers of God’s word of salvation. Wisdom does not necessarily have anything to do with age, experience or background. It is gift of the Holy Spirit and is strengthened through prayer and a virtuous life

2. Born to be a Prophet. In addition to being good listeners Christ also calls us to be good communicators. By virtue of being “born through water and the spirit” (John 3), we are called to be prophets in both word and action. Christ is speaking to each of us as he reveals that “a prophet is not welcome in his own country.” The thought of preaching to our own family may frighten us. However, until we give witness to our faith among those we love most, we aren’t experiencing the happiness that comes with true discipleship. There are different forms of preaching. Some are more effective than others; St Francis reminds us: “We are all called to preach the Gospel and sometimes even use words.”

3. Faith is the Key. Whether listening or preaching the key ingredient to success is faith. Without faith we can neither discern the voice of the Holy Spirit nor open our ears to his human messenger. Without faith we cannot give witness to Christ either in word or in action. Therefore Christ invites us to increase our life of faith through a more committed prayer life and a more dedicated effort to living faith in our decisions and actions.
“ Foster the life of faith within you. The standards and principles that rule your lives should be supernatural. Live your faith deeply, generously. Renew your faith especially in the presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. Let your prayers come to life with your faith. Increase your sensitivity of conscience every day, so that each day Jesus Christ will find you better and more attentive to him, eager to do each day something greater for God, for souls” (Father Marcial Maciel, LC, Envoy I, 32, February 7, 1963).
Dialogue with Christ: Lord, as I go forth from my prayer I have in my heart the voice of your Holy Spirit. You are calling me to be a faithful witness who is always open to God’s will. Grant me the grace to know your will this day and the strength to fulfill it.

Resolution: In conversation today, I will be the first to listen and the last to speak.
