Are there any Dr. Who fans here at TWeb?

The British sci-fi series hasn't been shown in the States for a number of years, but the videos are still around. If you are a fan (or you've seen the show before), I wanna know who is...

...your favorite Doctor?

...your favorite 'companion'?

...your favorite villian?

Also, do you have a favorite Dr. Who moment?

So Twebbers, does anyone else here appreciate the subtle charms of cardboard sets, rubber masks, and alien species who speak the Queen's English?

Greetings Luv1another,

Your memory is serving you well. You managed to answer the questions just as I would.

Tom Baker "the guy with the brown curly hair" is my all time favorite Doctor.

K-9 certainly qualifies as a 'companion', he (it) was probably the most loyal one of all. My fav was the first Romana (Mary Tamm).

The Daleks are also my favorite villians. I could never understand why they were so feared. They couldn't even climb stairs.

Thanks for helping get the thread off to a good start.:thumb:

Like luv1another, it has been a long time (that is becasue it is no longer shown locally).

And Tom Baker was the best.

The Daleks were great, but I like the guy (really old quadrapligic) who sometimes controlled the Daleks, what was his name.

As for assistants, Romana was one of my favorites, but Leila (I think that was her name) was my favorite. (but remember I was a young adolescent when I first saw her, and remeber what her costume was)

A little trivia. The very first episode of Dr. Who was aired on the day I was born. (Now some of you will know how really OLD I am)

The fellow's name was Davros (he created the Daleks btw).

Leela was great. She would sooner kill an alien than speak to it (and as you pointed out, she had a distinctive costume:wink: ).

You stumped me with your question. I suppose I could look it up on the web, but that'd be cheating.

I'll give others a chance to answer the date of the 1st Dr. Who episode.

I'm a fan of "Dr. Who" also.

I like Tom Baker and Peter Davison the best.
Sylvester McCoy isn't half-bad, either (haven't gotten around to seeing all of his episodes).
"The Two Doctors" featuring Troughton and C. Baker is one of my favorite episodes, otoh.

The Master is my favorite ongoing villain, but the two vile evildoers from "Suns of Pluto"--no, that's not the title, is it? Suns of something . . .

My all-time favorite episode is "The Caves of Androzani" on the basis of overall quality. Very dramatic, a good story, and with just enough comedy relief to keep the tragedy from being overpowering.

Talking like a dalek is fun (I love that "Mr. Bean" episode when he insinuates a model dalek into a creche).

I have many favorite assistants, and many of the assistants ended up providing names for pets, including Adric, Nyssa, Tegan, Romana, and Peri.

Peri is my favorite assistant (if I had to pick), since her whininess served as a perfect foil for Colin Baker's (his Doctor, anyway) ego. And, she had pluck.

Was she whinier than Sarah Jane? Sometimes I wondered if the Doctors thought about stranding her. :teeth:

That's the one! Same guy wrote that and "Caves of Androzani" iirc.

It's one of the few that's available on region 1 dvd.

Peri was an American, so her whining was in the Stateside style rather than SJ's more reserved manner. Peri was sweet, loud, and obnoxious!

Not quite, Faramir, unless your profile gives the wrong date. The first episode aired 11/23/63; your birthday, but three years earlier. It was also the day after Kennedy, C.S. Lewis and Aldous Huxley all died.

And you are but a young pup; I was already three years old at this time.:brow:

But who else here has seen the Dr. Who movies? Not the recent TV movie on FOX, but the 1960s ones with Peter Cushing as the Doctor?

Well, I read in a Dr. Who triva book (in the bookstore didn't take home) that it was 1966, the only reason that I remeber it is becasue that is the day I was born. But, the book could be wrong.

Captain Ochre:

With a forum name like that, how could you not be a fan of old British TV SF?

Let me think...
What about Blake's Seven?
ANY of the Gerry Anderson series (natch)?
Or Star Cops? (short-lived but excellent)
And let's not forget Red Dwarf, a fixture on PBS
And of course The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which was better on radio, IMHO (I remember hearing its very first airing and ROTFL. And, in Faramir-style trivia mode, I attended the same high school and college as Douglas Adams)

Me, I can't wait to see the upcoming Thunderbirds movie. And I would really like to find a way to see the recent but AFAIK unreleased CGI Captain Scarlet too.

You may reasonably conclude from this post that I am both British-born and a sci-fi nut.

I haven't seen them yet (the DVD's are in my area, though).

Are they any good?

HerodionRomulus
March 21st 2003, 07:23 PM
Yes!

Favorite Doctors: Colin Baker, Tom Baker.

Companions: Peri, Adric, Nyssa, K-9 and the second Romana, who was Tom Baker's wife. Does Lizzie the car count?
Also the Brigadier.

Favorite villains: Daleks, the Master and the Rani.

I have seen the Peter Cushing movie ages ago. It was so-so.

I once wrote the SciFi Channel to ask why they would not carry the Doctor.
The reply was that the picture quality of the program was not up to modern standards and they felt that the modern audience would not watch. (they are wrong but...)
But what do they know? They just cancelled Farscape! :argh:

Favorite Doctor: Tom Baker (far and away), with Peter Davison running a very close second.

Companions - Sarah Jane Smith - what a hottie! Adric, Tegan, Ace, K-9, and Turlough (the turncoat... nice twist). The Brigadier was great, too. The companions really made the show. I just didn't like the script-writers who decided that the females should be screaming machines (and have a vocabulary of "Doctor!" -- I'm reminded of "Oh, MacGyver!")

Favorite villains - The master, and the Valeyard.

Favorite episode - can't remember. It was too long ago.

Peter Cushing? No... sadly not.

I watched Doctor Who sporadically as a child.

I notice that there are quite a few episodes available on DVD. Does anyone here have a suggestion for which ones I should start out with?

Also, did anyone see the Fox TV-movie of Doctor Who a few years back? How was it?

That's a tough one. "Dr Who" is best appreciated as an ongoing story, imho. Episodes are "best" owing largely the context of the ongoing series. Davros in late episodes is best appreciated in terms of his history. Things happen in "Dr Who" that give rise to questions that are diffult to answer apart from the history of the show.
My favorite episode ("Caves of Androzani") is available on DVD, but I'll leave it to others to recommend a good semi-introductory episode.

I've always been fond of The Ribos Operation, it was the first episode I ever watched (I must have been 11 years old).

The Genesis of the Daleks is another episode of merit.

Has anyone seen the Dr. Who parody The Curse of Fatal Death, which stars none other than Rowan Atkinson and Jonathan Price? Its quite funny. :thumb:

No, but Blackadder: Back and Forth featured Atkinson in a Who-ish manner (along with faithful Baldric).
Also quite funny.
