This is the place to post those pics of the fish that didn't get away. Once I find it I will put up my biggest catch ever, even if it is a bit old(about a year ago).

Didn't eat him. Strictly catch and release. We don't have anyone who can clean them, or cook them for that matter. We are allowed to keep and eat them though. I have a few more pics I will upload later, and if TWeb is cooperating, a video or two as well.

No, it's owned by a friend. They're very nice. They let us fish there whenever we want. They also said we can eat the fish too, but we don't have someone in the family who knows how to clean them, or cook them for that matter.

It ain't that hard. For catfish, chop off the head, fins and tail, peel off the skin and slice open the belly and take out the guts. Fry the rest. Or just cut off the meat from the sides without even having to gut them. That way you don't even have to worry about the bones.

On regular fish, basically the same thing but instead of skinning, you scrape off the scales.
http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/filleting-your-fish.html

You basically fry em up like you would chicken strips. Batter them and fry em. All sorts of recipes on the internet too.

Well, it's too dangerous for me to even attempt(a small accident can cause lots of problems). Given my dad's last attempt, I doubt there will be any fish eaten any time soon.

One more question for you: What hooks are you using for the catfish?

I went to the Bass Pro Shop yesterday and asked for advice for hooks and they told me to use treble hooks in a certain size. But I know those don't really work for catch and release so I assume you're not using them. I'm curious if there's something a little easier to unhook that is working for you.

Hmm, well, we just use whatever we happen to buy. Right now we are using something like "Assorted Catfish Hooks"(my memory is fuzzy on the exact name), but some of those in the picture were caught with weedless hooks, and some with just ordinary worm hooks. If you are going only for catfish, I would suggest going big, bluegill can't bite on them. Bass can, but they don't always feed on the bottom like catfish do.

Went fishing, will be going fishing tomorrow. I already have some pics and videos, but they are on my mom's phone. I will upload them when I get the chance.

In the meantime, let my dad's story be a warning for everybody. He left his pole unattended, and something came and took the whole thing. This fish got away, and took a trophy for himself. :sigh:

Luckily we had a backup pole.

right. I later picked up the perch you caught and tied them to my pirate ship and they pulled me around the lake like sled dogs.

Folks, don't mess with squatch. The only way I think I could take him in a fight would be because the air is so thin up there where his head is. I think we should make him the official Tweb Bouncer.

The largest catfish is known as Pangasianodon gigas, or the Mekong giant catfish is regarded as being the world's largest (entirely) freshwater fish and is said to be able to reach a size of 3 meters (9' 10") long and weigh up to 350 kg (770 lb). The largest confirmed Pangasianodon, caught was in Thailand in 2005, where it is known as Pla Buk, which essentially means "huge fish," and was 2.7 meters (8' 10") long and 293 kg (646 lb).

you would probably need a boat to fish in the middle where it is deepest to catch one that big.

I have been reading about catfishing on some websites. Apparently everyone has a "secret bait and technique" that never fails to catch them :hehe:
And the bait varies all over the place: crawdads, worms, chicken livers, minnows, and even bubblegum! Other people say it doesn't matter what you use, they just hit by instinct so you have to get your bait to just about hit them on the head and they will snap it up. But everyone seems to agree that they like to stay on the bottom, hide in holes and brush, and like it cool, so shaded areas are the best.

Yeah I heard that one too. I think the best way would be to train the catfish what to like. We could talk the pond owner to toss in something that the catfish would like but the other fish don't. And keep doing that for a week or two. Then all of the catfish would be used to that bait and probably be waiting in one place for more. Then all we have to do is scoop em out! :hehe:

Apparently that big one was caught while fishing on the shore. He said he had to walk around the whole pond(maybe more than once) while fighting to bring it in. So, we don't need a boat, but it would probably help.

I went to Basspro this last weekend too, because my old tackle-box finally fell apart on me. I found a nice one for $14. While I was there I went to the fish demo, and I won some free plastic worms made for bass fishing. Supposed to be impregnated with special scent or something. Well after searching online I am making up some test catfish bait to try next time.
1. Plain hot dogs (like CP said)
2. Hot dogs marinated in garlic and salt and some peanut oil and bit of margarine.
3. Hot dogs marinated in some "garlic steak" marinate I found in my cupboard. It has a very strong smell.
4. I found some old salami in the fridge that was buried behind some stuff, it looks like it is going bad. Added some hot sauce to it and am letting it soak.

My theory is that catfish will eat anything that gets their attention. So people make up various outrageous baits and when they get lucky and the catfish notice it and bite, then they think they have a "secret catfish bait"

Reading up on catfish, they eat all sorts of gross stuff. They use their whiskers to smell with so anything with a strong odor (probably better if it is oil or grease based so it dissipates in the water less) will catch their attention if you get it close enough to them. They also seem to like to play with the bait a bit before eating it, and will suck it in and spit it out a few times and then try to eat it (sounds like a real cat huh? playing with it's food)

At least that is what I have read about catfish habits online.

Carp on the other hand are very skittish. I snagged one yesterday. I didn't get him in. I thought I was caught on some weeds. I stop pulling for a bit, and the bobber starts moving. I get it in where I can see, and I thought it was a log. I stopped reeling, and is swam off. :brood:

Reminds me of the time I caught the loch ness monster. I was sitting in a row boat from my pirate ship fishing with a cane pole and a cork when something took the line and dragged me all over the lake. Just before it ate me and my row boat a megalodon attacked it, and they went off fighting and left me alone. I did lose my cane pole though. I am told you can still hear it swishing through the water on foggy nights in the loch.

Went fishing with Brum again. The fish weren't biting for us too well, then it started picking up about the time we were tired out.

Brum caught big catfish, and he will probably post a photo later.

Cow Poke,
Apparently Indiana Catfish don't like hot dogs. I tried all three recipes (including the plain ones) and didn't even get a nibble. Brum's dad tried it too and he didn't get anything. Brum caught his catfish on a nightcrawler. Brum's dad caught several bass at the other end of the pond. So I went over there and gave it a shot and I got a strike on a bass, but it got away. But I did see a huge catfish there, it looked to be about 2 or more foot long! But it didn't like the artificial minnow I was fishing for bass with.

Later we saw some fish flipping around at a different spot, so I wandered over and tried catfishing with a worm. I got a large one in about 5 minutes. It looked to be about 15 inches long (about the same size as Brum caught) I got it almost to shore and it started fighting hard. I didn't have the net so I tried to drag it to the shore, but just then it shook his head really hard and the hook came free. Yeah I know, the one that got away story. But Brum saw it!

Hey, don't try to worm me into your fish tales!

:teeth:
Seriously though, I did see something big flopping near the shore, but nobody was able to get Sparko a net. From my angle, it had to be either a good size catfish, or a big bass. I think the hook wasn't set properly, and that's why it got away. It has to really take it for a hook to be set on it's own.

As for pictures, they are on my mom's phone. I'll need to get them later when I have access to it.

In other news, looks like it's going to be rainy for the next 2 weeks.

Next time, try more worms, and less "special" catfish bait.

There are also a few camo bass, that disguise themselves as logs and trees. I saw a bobber that brum lost to one of them floating above what appeared to be an underwater log. But brum is way too good of a fisherman to get stuck on a log. It had to be a camo bass.

We would probably save a lot of money on bait that way too.

My mom said you got a lot of bites, but that you were missing most of them. Other than the bass I caught, I only got like two other real bites.

Yeah, it was one of those nets for getting goldfish out of a tank so you can clean it. :hehe:

I think the bites I got were perch biting off the worm. It never took the bobber down.

I found a place that shows how to make minnow traps out of 2 liter bottles. I might try that and see what happens.

Yup, I caught 6 fish, my dad 4, and my mom 2. I need to upload the pictures though.

Well, if the weather stays as predicted, then I would think we should be able to go. I'll let you know when we have anything more concrete.

ETA: We have been seeing a monster fish jumping out in the middle ofr the lake. We even saw smaller version of this same fish jump really close to us. I've decided to call this beast the "Seasquatch" until we know what it is.

I got 1 perch, one bluegill, one sunfish, and one catfish. My dad got 2 bluegill, and 1 perch. My mom sadly got nothing. If she hadn't insisted on fishing just a little bit longer I wouldn't have caught that catfish. Happy about the catfish, not about my mom's lack of fish.

I only caught the two fish, my mom caught that turtle. My dad caught 2 bass and 4 bluegill, but he didn't get pictures of them.

I wish we had gotten that fight with the catfish on film, it was way more intense than the bass. My mom was getting me some water, which is why we don't have a video of it.

I hooked two big catfish, one broke the line straight out, the other was able to tangle himself in a downed tree and I had to give up.

Oh, and this is bizarre, but on of the bluegill was not hooked at all. The line was wrapped around his face, and his bottom fins. He was effectively hogtied. If only we had been able to take a picture of it, but it fell apart almost immediately after we figured out what happened.

These are the pictures from last night. The perch were biting like crazy just before we left. I caught a total of 13 perch, 1 bluegill, and one minnow*. My dad got a bluegill hybrid(not sure what the other was called, but it's very colorful), a bass, at least one perch, and a catfish. My mom got that poor perch with the tail problems. Looks like a fish scoliosis.

*Our minnow trap fell apart when dad threw it out, I tried to reel it in since I didn't have any bait on the line, when I pulled it back in a minnow was on the hook perfect to use as bait.

My dad and I both caught a catfish on Saturday, and we got some interesting minnows in our trap. They are excellent at attracting catfish*! His catfish was around 20-22".

I'm not sure, but that one catfish might be a "baby seasquatch". He jumped out of the water entirely when I reeled him in(no other catfish have done that before, and we see the Seasquatch do that fairly regularly). He is a lot paler than the Seasquatch, and quite a bit smaller. This guy was 24" long, and perhaps my biggest catfish ever. The others were caught by my dad. Those bluegill were caught by my mom. The perch are so common that we take less pictures of them now.

That one bass my dad is holding for a closeup is around 19".

*Sadly, they got off the hook before I could get them in. I know they were catfish, because nothing else hits that hard in that pond, nor can they bend my pole like that.

Pants are exceedingly uncomfortable for me to wear. In fact, downright painful. I also can't wear socks. So, shorts are and my Crocs are what I wear year round. Oddly enough, my legs don't really get very cold, but my feet can. I need to try and fix those shoes so no wind can blow in through those holes. I'd probably be fine then.

I knew an elderly man who developed a similar condition that afflicted his legs only -- especially around his knees. I would regularly see him during the winter wearing a heavy coat and thick socks and boots but also in shorts. Upon occasion his legs were nearly blue from the cold.

Yeah, it was pretty crazy. You're fighting a ~2mph current at first until the you untether from the anchor. They're barbless hooks, though, so you never set the hook, and you can't let the line go slack. If you tried to yank on the rod to set the hook, you'll actually just straighten the hook out.

The biggest one is ~31lb. I think they get up to ~45lb.

That sounds pretty cool. I wonder how our "Seasquatch"* measures up.

My biggest fish was maybe closer to 3-5 lbs. It was a 3' long carp. Half the time it was like fighting a giant bluegill, the other half was like reeling in dead weight. Unfortunately, I can't find the picture anywhere. :sigh:

*The nickname we gave to a previously unidentified fish we saw jumping out in the middle. We're pretty certain it's a giant flathead catfish. They can get over 100 lbs., but we have no idea how big this guy is. Quick glimpses of him jumping out in the middle is all we have to go on. From that, all we know is that he's big, brown(mostly), and has an unusual shaped(very blunt and wide) head.

Honestly, I think I like fishing for bass and catfish better. With only three salmon caught a piece, it's still a lot of work. It reminded me of halibut fishing where you're reeling in 300+ feet of line. Maybe I just need more practice.

I did give away over half of the salmon and still have 15 lbs of it in the freezer.

Most of them don't, which is why we had a hard time identifying the fish. It's shape, and color pretty much confirmed flathead catfish. Although, we don't get a good look that way. The only other possibility was some form of carp, but the head shape is all wrong.

My most recent channel catfish jumped out of the pond like he was a bass when I reeled him in. I wish I had that on film, oh well, maybe next year I can put a jumping catfish video up. :teeth:

While not so adept, we have seen them do pretty close to that when they try to get back in the water.

I knew they existed, but I haven't seen videos of it before.

It is not easy to get good fresh fish unless you live very close to the source. And freshness and proper handling are key.

I think it was Emeril that said if you can smell your fish, it's not fresh enough. Pretty much the only way to get it that fresh is catching it yourself or living near a fish market. I found out recently that Newport, OR (where we go to the beach) is a source for a lot of fish that gets sold down in San Antonio, TX.

There are actually a number of such fish aside from walking catfish including mudskippers (which is much better adapted to it as they're considered to be entirely amphibious and ustilize their pectoral fins to walk on land) and epaulette shark (from the Southern Hemisphere who wriggle their bodies while pushing themselves along with their paired pectoral and pelvic fins).

Then there are climbing perches that move themselves across dry land with their tails while using their gill plates for support. One species can survive without water for 6 days.

But they have nothing on the tiny South American mangrove killifish which can remain out of water for over 66 days! Moreover they are known to climb trees as well where they live inside rotten branches and trunks. Other fish can also climb trees such as the aforementioned climbing perch and some of those walking catfish.

Supposedly Einstein once said that “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” Well guess what Einstein

I caught 8 fish, my mom got 3, and unfortunately my dad didn't get any. I'm holding up my fingers like that for keeping count.

Do you have to wear those kinds of shoes? They don't look comfortable to me.

Sorry Carrik, not laughing at you.

Oddly enough they are one of the only pairs of shoes I can wear due to comfort. I think I got those more than 15 years ago. I just recently found a pair that can be used when these wear out. We put those slips of denim over the top to keep my feet from burned/tanned from the holes it has in them.
