View Full Version : Why did you join Tweb?

Or other theology/religion discussion boards? I'm interested in seeing if people's attitudes in joining reflect their attitudes as posters as well.
I joined after My brother showed me the site and i browsed a little. My main reason was to try and learn different views and in so, either change or solidify my beliefs on many issues. I'm still going through this and I tend to swing back and forth on certain issues. I occasionally find myself ending a post with a different view/opinion than when I started and having to delete it which I find to be great as I turn a critical eye on all my thoughts. Oh well, that's the attitude i came with and hope to maintain.

I grew up in a household that was very intellectually nurturing and stimulating, even though it was an emotional disaster area. I actually grew up with the idea that if two people with opposing views made a real effort to understand each other they could both learn something. "A wise man can learn something from anyone, even a fool. A fool cannot learn from anyone, even from a wise man." That was a favorite saying of my grandfather's.
So I've always been interested in dialogue with people who don't agree with me, who think thoughts that haven't occurred to me. I've also always been interested in why so many people aren't interested in that: in what was the origin, and cure, for fixed ideas and hostility toward those who disagree. I've been interested in nonviolent conflict resolution, and peace with justice.
This includes seeking peace with justice in the "culture wars." For about two years now, I have been actively pursuing dialogue with fundamentalists, right-wing ideologues, and others whose views are diametrically opposed to my own, both face-to-face and on the internet, because with more and more people being crowded closer and closer to each other with easier and easier access to things that go boom, learning to live together in peace is no longer a nice thing to dream about -- it is something we either do, or we die.
These dialogues are my own little iota in the peacemaking.
I am also motivated by wanting to get feedback on my own thinking and keep myself reality-checked. Not everybody in my face-to-face life wants to talk philosophy of religion OR philosophy of politics at the level I get into; in order to preserve my physical-life relationships, I keep most of my abstract discussions online. In order to preserve my rationality, however, I need to air my ideas and get feedback -- doing all your thinking in the closet, you can spin off into your own pocket universe. Been there, done that.
The best conversation I had found so far has been on the About.com forums, especially Christianity - General. One of the posters there commented, a couple of months ago, that he had found a new forum called Theology Web where there was less flame and more real intelligent dialogue, so I came over here to check it out. edited this sentence because I really mangled the first version, I am just glad some of you figured out what I meant anyway! There IS a high level of responsible moderation and inelligent dialogue here. For my own purposes, though -- both of rapprochement in the culture wars and personal reality-checking -- one of the advantages to Theology Web is that it is dominated by conservaive Christian theology, unlike Christianity - General, which is dominated by liberals.
Like you, Tf, I "think out loud." It is in the process of expressing myself that I find out what I think. This is one of the reasons I like web forums -- and the main reason I write such long posts. Theology Web not only lets me write longer posts than any other forum, it even rewards me with anti-spam points! :woohoo:

I joined TWeb in an exodus from another place as well as many others, but the reason I had been drawn to theological discussion boards originally was from an advertisement for another place. I had just gotten a computer and gotten online, and went directly there, and I got hooked from day 1. I hate that I spend so much time at this place and at others, but in a way I am grateful that if I had to become addicted, it is to these types of boards and not other places on the internet.

My senior Pastor had an interesting comment: in Christian fellowship we "norm" each other meaning that as we walk with others we keep each other from straying too far to the left or too far to the right.
One of the most challenging things for me as a Christian with an introverted personality is finding fellowship and feeling safe in it. Understanding "no man (or woman) is an island is easier said than done when you really don't like crowds and would rather talk with people one on one or through writing or music. I am involved in my church but we also need to be involved in ministry and fellowship outside of our church. T-web gives me the opportunity to be in fellowship with other Christians (and even with non-Christians) on a daily basis.
As to "norming" each other, I know that because of my background and my own personal tendencies (think type A personality...) if I am left to my own devices I tend toward unforgiveness and legalism- straying too far off to the right as it were. I am thankful that by God's grace when I veer too far off the path He sends me a witness to steer me back toward the center. We need both the existential and "da rules" (Law and Gospel) but they need to be balanced. That "norming" is one of the things that happens on T-web as well as in my church. My church is intense- it is not a place of lukewarm Christians- but a place of dynamic, active faith. I thank God for landing me in a church that is this way- that takes the Gospel seriously and is in many ways an intensive care unit for a sinner who was pretty far gone. I also thank Him for bringing me to T-web as one way to move beyond Peace Church and out into a broader community.
"For where two or three are gathered in My name, there am I with them." Matthew 18:20 (NIV)

A funny thing happened on the way to the other Forums.. :teeth:
I actually joined 'cos the Spirit said to.. I just can't remember if it was Scotch or Vodka..
Seriously though, T-Web started out with some people that I had appreciated on another board, and although I wasn't sure about coming here at first (because of certain incidents at the other place), after a period of time watching what was being built here, I saw that T-Web was going to be something special.
Since then, I have met some great people that I would call 'Friends".. if not Brothers and Sisters.. and even succumbed to letting the management convince one of MY mods to become one of theirs (and boy am I happy for the both of you.. T-Web and Kaz.. I knew it would be good for her!) :teeth:
I guess the bottom line is, T-Web is special.. not just because of Dee Dee, Cir, and Yx and the staff, but because of the Members and the people who come here to share.. who wouldn't want to be part of it??!!?

I think I joined the coolest way out of anyone.
OK, so for about 1, 1 and a half years I was a member of a board called CreationWeb.org (this isn't advertising, it really does have to do with my story). The admins decided it was time to change it from Creation vs. Evolution, because they felt the argument was going nowhere and wasn't profitable. So, they wanted to change it to a different name that'd suit their theological purposes better.
Naturally, I thought "How about TheologyWeb.org?" Well, at this time TWeb owned both the .com and .org domain name. So I type in "theologyweb.org" and I get here.
Fate has it that I see a few posters that used to be on CreationWeb.org. I like the discussions and I joined.
I've always liked theological debates, though I'm not the one usually debating. I like knowing there are places on the internet where it is possible to have a profitable, Christian, good time.
In short. I was bored

I really joined Tweb because I was a moderator on another Christian board that was mostly made up of people younger than I, who only like to talk about anime, (which I kow nothing about, and don't even like......) with a little bit of theology thrown in once in a while. When MelMak joined CAA, (an anime site that we have a link to), he showed me the link from there to here. It was the first time I had even thought of joining an "adult" Christian board, I had never even looked for any before!
I don't believe it was an accident that I found Tweb. I believe that God puts us in certain places and in certain times, and brings people into our lives for us to minister to. And I have come to love you all so much, and appreciate how much you are all teaching me! May the Lord allow us to grow together.

I want a place where I can float my various ideas and have people dismantle them. I want a place where I can think critically about anything and have that respect as long as I respect others. I want a place where moderation is done in moderation. I want a place where intellectuals can be themselves and still interact with those who could not care less about academic pursuits. I want a place where serious discussion occurs without feelings being hurt. I want a place where I can throw an outlandish idea on the table and have it taken apart without thinking it is a personal attack. I want a place where I can work in the original languages of the Bible and have others who are able to critique me fairly.
In short, I want a place where Christian academics meets Christian living.
Thus, I want TWeb.

I had been active on another board for about three weeks. I originally went to debate preterism since I was a new convert to that position and wanted to test my beliefs.
I and thought that board was fantastic (well the first two weeks were fantastic then all heck broke loose ). The main reason I loved this other board so much was the quality of the people that posted there.
Then all of a sudden everyone (without exception!!!!!!) that made the other board fantastic was at this new board here and not there, so I came here too.
IOW it is the people that IMHO make TWeb great especially the leadership (despite the fact that they count me among the leaders).

:ddw: commanded invited me to join, I believe after seeing a post of mine in a Yahoo! group. I'd never belonged to a vboard before but found this one easy to navigate and managed to make friends very quickly. The level of intellect and open-ness hooked me immediately and has never failed to do so.
Since joining, I have confessed one instance of forum infidelity...I joined the Josh Groban fan club board. I confessed here mostly because I wanted to tell the TWeb owners what an awesome job they've done with this place. I had no idea what a special environment and high level of functionality had been created here until I looked around elsewhere. Now I'm spoiled rotten.
I have made lifelong friendships here...beyond that, even. I believe I have a date with several TWebbers in a couple billion years to have a non-alcoholic beer in Heaven, courtesy of RightIdea! I've had a marvellous opportunity to work through unresolved issues, find out what others think, hone my knowledge, spam like nobody's business, and discover the joy of pearls! Where else can you debate the validity of speaking in tongues using exclusively smilies? I tell ya...I'm home!

I came here from a link from Tektonics long ago. :ddw: had asked me to post long ago as she probably does many new joinees, but had felt unsure back then. It's interesting, but amazing the different views presented, and that has kept Tweb a place to learn and reference in understanding how others (all kinds of others) view God.
Could be an interesting thread to see what posters others admire in their different areas. But that may have already been done.

Greetings ManM! welcome to TWEB, while there are a good number of pointless insults thrown around by some posters here (of all kinds), I hope you will find the majority to be civil and respectful, and often even willing to discuss rather than argue with rhetoric. I left another board because I got sick and tired of the politics. I heard about TWeb via a post on a board during my se I came across, decided to check it out and have been here ever since. I have appreciated the broad range of beliefs here and that most can be questioned without assuming I'm attempting to rip them a new one. I'm here because of JPH. I only used to post to Worship discussion boards, and would often start touching on other aspects of theology that weren't strictly related to worship. Looking at Tektonics a while ago, JPH posted a link to a debate thread at another place, and I can remember being faced with a registration form just to view the thread. I thought "Forget that, it doesn't even look good (as in aesthetically pleasing)"
A bit later on, JPH started posting links to this new place called TheologyWeb. I can't remember registering, but my join date says January 2003, so I must've joined straight away. I think my first post was responding to a question from Gavin about apostles for today - actually that might be what made me join - I wanted to reply, so had to join up. There were quite a few threads on Charismatic "issues" that I felt I would be able to answer, so I joined up and answered.
I think I've stayed because of the professionalism of the site (meaning the slick design, responsible moderation and stuff - maybe excellence is a better word), combined with the warmth of genuine community of people where you can be slamming someone's viewpoint in one thread, and then cosying up to them as buddies once in the rec room - all without a hint of hypocrisy or false-hood. It took me a while to discover the Rec Room, but when I did, it sucked me in even further.
I think I'm here until TWeb gets nixed, or the Lord returns - whichever one is sooner. Actually, I'm probably here until I get married one day, and my wife starts complaining about how much I'm on the computer. Don't worry guys, I'll fend her off as long as I can, but it'll ultimately come down to priorities and I won't be living in the same house as y'all. :teeth: Either way, I'm here for a long time, with no intention of leaving.
Blessings,
Jon
PS. For curiosity's sake, I just nipped over to the other place and the first thread I looked at contained a post saying "Who's gonna be the bigger man here and put the other one on ignore?" I can't imagine anyone at TWeb saying that, and that's another reason I'm gonna stay here! :thumb:

I've had a couple of people interested, but they're Brits or European without unlimited accounts with their ISPs. Some older forums such as AOL's 'Spirituality' boards have the ability to mark folders and download using an offline reader. Meaning, the account holder can connect long enough to download what amounts to e-mail and read/respond offline. These people would probably participate if the BBS software had OLR capability.

I forgot to mention, that like many of you, JP Holding is responsible for directing me here. He had a link to "That Other Location" which is the site I was at before TWeb.

I've always wondered, what is the story with the Other Place Exodus? Can someone in the know PM me if it isn't supposed to be publically mentioned? Even if only to say "It's far too messy - it wouldn't be good for you to know..." Just curious - I was never an active part of the Other Place, so have only ever known the glories of TWeb.

In general though, no matter what our differences may be, let's please try not to slam another forum in the thread while still sharing how we all ended up here. The past is gone, what we have become and do is something really totally different and we are moving ahead with all of you, very cherished friends and members. I cannot express the depth my gratitude for you guys, and a very special endearment to those who did support us during those rough times. But look where we are now!
Please keep sharing your stories, I am very interested.

nonsense,
you don't have to agree with someone completely to be their friend and you don't have to win someone over completely to your side to influence them.

Oh, to win friends and save the US's democracy and Christianity by working towards a detente in the cultural wars that are poisoning our democracy and will undermine Christianity's future by its pharasaical nature and the barriers put up from the former.
Actually, I was at another forum and someone posted a link from here there and I followed it and became a member, immediately upon entry I discovered teh political science forum. This was really attractive for me, because at the other forum there were hardly any political science buffs like me and it was getting annoying for all of us. I also liked its better mix of Christians and Non-Christians.
And so while I tried to post in two forums for a while, I decided finally that I could really only belong to one and this one was the better fit for me.

I first "peeked" under the recommendation of LA.... I noticed that freethinkers were not only encouraged to participate but were considered as valuable individuals and treated equaly by mods and administrators as believers are. I had experienced various Christian forums where freethinkers were censored or so restricted that there was no possible dialogue with them.
After I peeked for a while, I joined. I have truly appreciated the variety of forums which stimulate both intellectual exchanges and more personal sharing. Making it that anyone no matter what background or circumstances they may be in can "fit somewhere".
IMO TWeb stimulates growth and reflection. I have no doubt that some of the exchanges can have a transforming effect on some of us.
I wanted and needed to find a place to grow in written exchanges. I severed my "ties" with a secular forum I would faithfuly post in, in September after my mother's suicide. It was also time for me to find a place of comfort and thoughts which are captive of Christ. T Web became a shelter where I know my communication would be caringly handled.

My cousin Willow and I were yacking and she suddenly pulled out an enormous Gluon Impact Cannon and told be I would have Gluons on my mind if I didn't join TWeb.
What's a bat to do? I joined so that she wouldn't disintegrate me! Then I met Mononoke and started chatting with her, and before I even realized what I was doing, I had enough posts to put up an avatar.
So I said, "What the heck! I can draw a five minute picture of my pointy-eared superhero and upload it. I might as well stay!"
I must say: this is my second day properly browsing this place, and already I'm fond of it.

I was on another theology board for a few weeks, there was the exodus and I ended up here. I think I was the 5th member registered, right after patroclus.
The first night we were up was awesome. Pat and I started the now famous "Alden / Patroclus Bicker Thread" where we threw verbose insults back and forth so that I could get enough posts to get an avatar. (Do you remember Rubez?). I think I started modding within 2 weeks. It's led to some good friendships, and I even had the pleasure of sitting down to dinner with Mr. + Mrs. Boom. Good times indeed.

[QUOTE=elysian] My church is intense- it is not a place of lukewarm Christians- but a place of dynamic, active faith. I thank God for landing me in a church that is this way- that takes the Gospel seriously and is in many ways an intensive care unit for a sinner who was pretty far gone. I also thank Him for bringing me to T-web as one way to move beyond Peace Church and out into a broader community.
"For where two or three are gathered in My name, there am I with them." Matthew 18:20 (NIV)[/QUOTE
I came looking for elysian's kind of church in Tweb, but so far have found the usual suspects.

I joined because I was following a thread from google and wanted to read it. I liked the courtesy that was being shown quite a bit between the different people of different faiths as well as atheists. So I read whenever I had time on threads that I did have an interest in.
I also like the play areas that are available here which makes the forum more like real life where the interactions are based on fun events in common and religion isn't brought in.
I like listening to different points of view because it helps my acceptance of all humans everywhere and of course might give me thoughts to pass on to another in regular life.
I like that there is a nice mix of liberals and conservatives with many shades in between.

Hehehe. LOL, I originally joined to debate shounen ai/yaoi with people from the Board Of My Bannination (aka the Christian Anime Alliance, where even favorably mentioning Gravitation or HeeroxDuo will get you banned in seconds, often under false pretenses :ahem: ).
Not the best motive for joining, ne?
So I left Tweb for a while. Anyway, a lot of things happened, and I end up resigning from my moderator position at CF and leaving the board in a debate over my liberal stances on homosexuality and my disagreement with a biased moderating clique. ^^
Then, someone I knew online from the CAA insults me and tells me I'll fit in with all the "atheists and churchians" here. Well, it's pretty much my only choice left, although I like CF better. So, I'm here, again, hopefully to do some good and convince people that there's a little more to me than simply being a liberal shounen ai fangirl LOL. ^^

I hung out at Bob and George (http://forums.bobandgeorge.com/) alot. Then there was this thread where someone linked to the Jack Chick site. Eventually a theological discussion cropped up. But then again, many people at B&G think "HAHA! U BELEEVE IN JEEBUS! UR STUPID!" to be a decent rebuttal. I heard about this forum from Holding's site. And it piqued my interest.
 BTW: I'm kinda new here, and am having trouble putting up an avatar. Sorry if this is a bit spammy, but can anyone give me some tips? I went to "Edit Avatar" but I still can't do anything.

I joined TWEB because I got tired of talking to brickwalls on NetScape. When you go to the trouble of constructing a thoughtout reply to some "objection" against Christianity and only end up being either ignored or completely and deliberately misinterpreted, you begin to realize there are better ways of spending your time. Watching paint dry is more constructive.
Posters at TWEB at least make the attempt to understand what you are saying and try to reply within the statement.
