View Full Version : The Sharper Image Ionic Breeze?

I have an African Grey parrot. That means our house is a dust bowl, horrible, from bird dander. It is everywhere. In an effort to curb the dust I got one of the Ionic Breezes (it is ordered, I do not have it yet - and no I did not pay full prices - yikes it is expensive, but bought one refurbished by The Sharper Image) - I am awaiting delivery.
I know they got slammed by Consumer Reports but a lot of people swear by them. I just need it for simple dander control in the bird room. I liked that it had no filter (those HEPA filters on the other ones we looked at are ridiculously expensive).
So anyone else have one?

Because of allergies I went for an Ionic purifier. I researched the Ionic Breeze, but went with a Neotec XJ2000 because unlike the IB, what is required for the IB to function properly you have the air circulate within the unit where the -ions attach to the air particles; however, the Neotec spits the -ions out of the unit replicating the environment of a waterfall so therefore doing what the IB does without the limitations of the IB.

Yes I saw ones which did a whole lot mmore, but for the simple issue of bird dander (we don't have allergies) I thought this would be pretty good.

The neotec sells for about $50

Hmm if we need to get something for other rooms, can you post a link here so I can check it out? I will let everyone know how the IB does in the bird room which is by far the worst.

I own a Shaklee AirSource 3000 (http://www.shaklee.net/sellars/product/55102), one of the best purchases I've ever made. It produces a negative electrostatic field that positively charges particles suspended in the air. Then, those articles fall to the ground.
I'm suspect of anything that actually uses a magnet or a filter system as they truly only filter about 1/3 of what's floating around in your room. Also, this unit works on two rooms, as long as there's ventilation from an open door or window. It takes away odor and particles.
Unfortunately, the price may not be worth it.

Well there was a concern that the Ionic Breeze may harm our birds. We checked with two vets who gave us the green light. TheSharperImage has not gotten back with me yet. I am going to call them back today.

I ordered the Ionic Breeze from Sharper Image a few months ago.
I could not tolerate the strength of whatever it emits (ozone?), so I returned it for a refund.
There are better products available, which have no possible adverse effects.

I'm curious on this too. I vacuum a lot -with four cats you have to- and my husband is a 2 pack a day smoker. Fortunately (?) for me my sinuses and nasal passages are virtually destroyed from all those years of working in or near automotive shops and therefore sucking up exhaust fumes and all the nice carcinogenic chemicals techies use like brake-clean and carb-clean all day, so it would have to smell pretty bad for me to notice. I use the sprinkly carpet stuff before I vacuum just to smell something, and I spray the curtains and furniture with Febreze as well, just in case something stinks and I don't know it. There's a bad side to this though- I have to be very careful when I wear cologne- for me to be able to smell it to most people it would be way too strong. Liz Taylor's Passion cologne smells good to me but I've been told it is overwhelming. I do clean a lot- especially the bathroom and kitchen and cat boxes and of course the floors and curtains but the cig smoke leaves so much stinking dust. Dust on everything. I wonder if these air purifiers help much with dust?
If they help cut down on the dust it could be worthwhile.

This sounds like something a friend was selling, but hers was about $250. How do you like it so far?
Dee Dee, please be sure to share waht you find out. At this point I have a Honeywell job with a hepa filter. Those filters are expensive but I can actually breathe in the room Norm is in.

Well I just got it. I am very sceptical. (also note that I bought one directly from The Sharper Image as a factory refurbished - I did not have 350 dollars to blow, this one was 200 but it comes iwth the same warranty and looks brand new). It doesn't seem to blow any air hardly at all. I went to bed though feeling kinda odd, but I dunno if it was that. I will be running it more today.
The proof in the pudding will be about after a week when I clean the filter and see how much gunk is on it.

We have two and they seem to remove dust and cigarette smoke nicely (Gail is alergic). A hint - for the non-hepa filter, I hand wash it gently thus making it re-usable. (gentle because it does seem to deteriate but I've gotten three washes out of one filter)

We have been using it for about a year and very pleased. Kids and wife have bad allergies so they stay in the house with no problem.

You will really like the Roomba, it's one of the few gadgets I got that wife actually approves of after seeing how good it works.

I have been reading up on it online and think it will be perfect for us. The bird dander gets everywhere and this would be ideal to keep the floors clean.

There's an air cleaner that is advertised on American Family Radio. Does anyone remember what it's called? I can never remember.

Jinx, could it be the Silent Surround Air Inoizer? (I just came across an add for it in the May 1 World Magazine.)
Yxboom, what's the story on the Roomba. It looks very interesting. Do you have pets? Is it the kind of thing where you have to make sure that there's absolutely nothing on the floor. I'm thinking of wires, dog chew fragments and, well, dogs and their tails. I mean, am I going to come home one day and find my dog hysterically trying to chew a vacuum off his rear?
What about throw rugs, dust ruffles and long curtains?
[Nevermind. The FAQ covers all of that.]

Hi: After a few weeks of research I finally decided on an air purifier. I looked into the Oreck, the Ionic Breeze , the Shaklee unit, and others, and I ended up with "The Room Sentinel" by Enviroshield. For the price - it's one of the best ( around $300.00). I went direct to the factory rep. It ranks up there with the Shaklee unit which is about $700 . The unit I got requires no cleaning . You plug it in and nothing to worry about for 3 years. You have to replace a part of the unit after 3 years and that will cost about $75.00.I have had it for 3 weeks and it is great. It just came out and is very high tech. It is being used in China at government and health facilities ( because of the sars virus) . This unit kills airborne bacteria and viruses also and that's why . The Ionic breeze has quite a few lawsuits on it's hands and in spite being a huge success , it has very poor ratings in the test results the rep at Enviroshield emailed me. Anyway - If interested I can give you an address so you can get the info . Before buying - I had contacted 4 people who had bought the unit and they all gave high marks. It is very quiet and does attack odors and I am very happy with it.

Well the Ionic Breeze appears to be workng for what we needed it to, to catch very fine bird dander out of the air. It is catching at least some of it. Only over the long haul I guess will we know for sure how much, but the metal collection rods are covered with dander.

Consumer Reports rated the Ionic Breeze the worst air purifier. Thought you should know.

Yeah I read that - I have had mine for over a year now though and for the purpose we needed it for, it is working out. I needed to get bird dander out of a small area and it is certainly doing that.
