One bright sunny day while walking in the shadow of a tall mountain a young man prayed, “God please humble me.” God heard his prayer and with infinite wisdom and compassion led the man on a journey. Together God and the man weathered storm after storm. First there was the disease, not a real dangerous one but dangerous enough to humble the man. Next there was the surgery it went good at first but then came the touch of death and the man was humbled a little more. Then came the replacement surgeries, each one brought the man to his knees, each time the Spirit of Humility blessed him.

“God,” many years later the man prayed, “Why are all these bad things happening to me? I know each of them has brought about a deeper relationship with you but isn’t there another way? I’m so tired of struggling with life, I’ve no strength left to enjoy it.”

Then came the answer for which the man was not prepared to hear, “I have only answered your prayer. Are you not humbled?”

“Out of my great needs you have truly humbled me,” the man answered.

Suddenly he realized his humility was not out of sense of who God is but out of what God could do for him. Tears filled the mans eyes as he struggled for the words to beg forgiveness, “Heavenly Father,” the man started, “I have done you a great injustice, I have loved you only for what you can do for me! Please do not forsake me but accept the Spirit of Repentance with which I pray today. All these years you have but answered my prayer but now, O Lord I see the error of my heart. My tears are not for me but for you Lord, because I have dishonored you. I know I cannot undo the past I can only go into the future. I pray you will bless me with your presence not because I walk in the shadow of high mountains but because I just want to be with you because I love you. Please continue to lead me in paths of humility Lord but not out of a sense of need, out of a sense of suffering but out of a sense of love, out of a sense of feeling your greatness and my nothingness.”

In a World beyond time and space the Creator smiled and prepared to once again bless the man with the Spirit of Humility.
