This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness we lie and do not live by the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. (1st John 1:5 - 1:7 NIV)
When I was a kid I was afraid of the dark so I slept with a toy gun under my pillow thinking it would provide me comfort! Now at the age of 57 I am still afraid of the dark but now God is my source of security not a toy gun. When the lights go out and I’m alone my heart still beats a little faster, my breathing still becomes shallow, and my hands still sweat, but my faith in my God gives me peace in spite of the physical signs of fear.
However, my greatest fear of darkness does not come when the lights go out but when my faith weakens and I find myself walking in spiritual darkness.
Jesus - I know today I will encounter circumstances that will be beyond my faith’s ability to sustain me. So please Jesus when you feel my faith weakening and when you see darkness closing in around me please strengthen and light my life with your faith. - Amen.
