From the Life’s Road to Nowhere to the God’s Road of Life…
A 6-mile scenic drive that was never completed, the “Road to Nowhere” provides a wealth of scenic mountain views, wildlife and hiking trails, including the 6-mile Noland Creek Trail. The Road to Nowhere ends at the mouth of a tunnel. Originally known as Lakeview Drive, the Road to Nowhere was planned in the early 1940s as a second entrance into Cades Cove from the North Carolina side. However, construction on the road was abandoned amid concerns about its high cost and environmental impact on the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. And it has become to known as the Road to Nowhere.
While the GSMNP Road to Nowhere had its beginning in 1943 it was not the first road to nowhere back before time was measured in the Garden of Eden Adam “did it wrong” and thus began Life’s Road to Nowhere. But because God created humankind to return to him another road needed to be created. The apostle Paul explains it this way.
“Here it is in a nutshell: Just as one person (Adam) did it wrong and got us in all this trouble with sin and death, another person (Jesus) did it right and got us out of it. But more than just getting us out of trouble, he got us into life! One man said no to God and put many people in the wrong; one man said yes to God and put many in the right.” (Romans 5:18–19, The Message)
“…he got us into life!” But don’t get the idea that God’s Road of Life is an easy journey. Before his arrest, trial, death, and resurrection Jesus said, “…Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33, NLT)
One evening on one of our trips to the Great Smoky Mountain National Park I decided to drive Parsons Branch Road. It proved to be a “hold your breath white knuckle grip” 8 mile trek in the dark on an unimproved wilderness path (road). I’ve since wanted to take the journey in the daylight but Patti says over her dead body will she go. So I guess its one time journey for us. In retrospect the journey down Parson’s Branch Road is similar to God’s Road of Life. Here’s a brief description that in no way comes even close to being on it yourself, however if you look back on your life you’ll not really need a description.
Parsons Branch Road there are 18 creek fords on this road. They are all concreted and easy to cross, but some are nearly a foot deep and might require extreme caution in bad weather… The road is uncrowded, scenic, exciting, and leads to the Dragon. Parsons Branch Road is not for the inexperienced rider… The road is one way desolate and can be a real adventure in the winter months… It is not a road for the squeamish, but if you're looking for a lot of excitement, don't miss this one.
One last thing – no one travels on God’s Road of Life alone the Holy Spirit is your constant companion, guide, and helpmate.
