What books would you recommend on the subject of modern cosmology and its relation to Theism?
I've read some of W. L. Craig's material ('Kalam Cosmological Argument' and 'Reasonable Faith'). I've also read 'The Creator and the Cosmos' by Hugh Ross and there are a few other books in my shelf that I haven't read yet ('Universes' by John Leslie and 'Show Me God' by someone, whose name can't remember). And of course I've read some of the popular books that deal with issues of cosmology, like Hawking's 'Brief History of Time'.
So, can you recommend any other books?
If someone has read both 'The Creator and the Cosmos' and 'The Fingerprint of God' by H. Ross, can you tell how much there's new material in the latter? As I've read the former, will I learn anything significant from the latter book?

Have you looked at anything by John Polkinghorne?

I haven't read anything written by Polkinghorne. What books by him you'd recommend?

I found a cheap copy of Polkinghorne's 'Belief in God in an Age of Science' from Barnes&Noble's used books, so I ordered it. It will take many weeks before I'll receive it, though, because I chose the cheapest possible international shipping.

Hey Pate,
Polkinghorne's an interesting guy. He studied with Paul Dirac, became president of Queen's College, Cambridge, was knighted for his scientific work, and is now Canon Theologian of Liverpool. Though he's not the most conservative thinker around, his work is well worth exploring. He wrote an fine text on the relationship between science and theology, as well as the best seller, The Faith of a Physicist. I heard him speak a few years back and got the chance to talk with him a bit; he's got a wonderful intellect as well as a beautifully humble and caring heart.

Today, I picked up P's The God of Hope and the End of the World; it was an interesting read, sort of a speculative synthesis of physics and eschatology.

Pate, are you looking to reconcile modern Cosmology and Christianity? Or something much broader?

Well, mostly I'm just interested in the implications that modern cosmology has for issues of philosophy of religion. I do look at this from a Christian perspective, but my views seldom lead to any actual conflict between faith and science, because I don't find it necessary to interpret the creation account hyper-literally, etc. However, that doesn't mean that I'm not interested to learn more about even those views that I don't agree with (be it atheistic, fundamentalistic Christian or whatever). I try to keep my mind open.

Try Genesis and the Big Bang by Dr. Gerald Shroeder. It's great.
