I read the first edition of this book years ago and thought it was great then... haven't read the second edition even though I have it in my library!

I've read this, as well. I think it is rather well written. I don't recall that it covered much on the Orthodox Church, though. It would be interesting to read a history of the church from their POV.

That could just be because I'm not interested so much in recent history.

One Bad Pig: Probably the most widely acclaimed history of the Orthodox Church is The Orthodox Church by Timothy/Kallistos Ware (1963). Most large libraries will probably have it. There are lengthy extracts from it online:

This lengthy article (http://www.goarch.org/en/ourfaith/articles/article7053.asp) on Orthodox history has several reading suggestions at the end.
