We got:

Click here to download ICQ (http://web.icq.com/)

Click here to download Yahoo! Messenger (http://messenger.yahoo.com/)

Click here to download AOL Instant Messenger (http://www.aim.com/)

Click here to download Lycos Messenger (http://messenger.lycos.com/)

**Word of caution - Chatrooms contain weirdos. Stay away from 'em (the rooms)**

I'm thinking of nixing one of them from my comp. Which one is the best IYHO?

I certainly don't need them ALL. I only got ICQ to get the nifty flower icon in my profile.

It is said that Steve Case, the CEO of AOL, has a third nipple, which he uses to suckle a black kitten sent to him by his master Satan in reward for him opening up Usenet to his AOL subscribers in 1996. So AIM is out.

I can't even believe Lycos is still going. What do they do to make money? Do they give you access to some of the other networks somehow?

ICQ, i have no experience with.

YM is pretty much okie-dokie. It's the one I use.

MSN has an instant messenger prog that they bundle with XP. I have it but have never used it. I don't know what support it offers for other networks, if any. I tend to avoid most of the supplemental programs bundled with my MS operating systems because they are usually not as complete as a dedicated program from a 3rd party and I think it's a good idea not to allow a single supplier to control too many different functions.

As I read the above a sudden gust of air shot over my head. I think it was the above

I downloaded it a matter of hours ago as I recieved a spam which seemed to indicate that it was "new." I can't seem to get it to connect so I may nix it.

Nor do I. I might just nix it.....and it's nifty icon.

I got it while I got my hotmail account. But I don't use it either.

I don't use any client bercause IM is the work of Satan!!

I don't like MSN or their unethical practices, so I stay away from that. I don't like CNN, so I avoid AOL. And Yahoo, well, they're just dorks. I... didn't... know.. that... Lycos... had... an... IM...

You've heard of Trillian, haven't you? Where you can take all your messeengers and use one client. Well, there's Integrity Messenger (http://www.integritymessenger.com/) which does the same thing. :thumb:

I nixed ICQ a while ago. Every I talked to on it migrated to AIM so I wasn't really sad to see it go either.

The only reason I like AIM is I have several ISP-challenged friends with dial-up, who constantly are crippled from incoming calls by their busy signals. With my cable connection, I can sign on to AIM quickly and get these AOL bozos (said in the most loving way) offline so I can call them on the phone. I'm checking out Integrity Messenger though ... that sounds like a good idea to integrate them all for the various tastes of my friends.

You had no option for None but that is my preference. I don't need to be THAT connected.
I'm not a technophobe or anything but email or the phone is quite sufficient.

I never could stand talking on the phone, something about it just bugs me.

YM is okay.

For one on one discussion, there is none better than the "chat" mode of ICQ. You see every keystroke the other person is typing and can respond in a much more realistic real-time way. The immediacy of feedback can't be duplicated by any system that only allows..."write, send, wait, read"

AIM - I don't like AOL but I suffer through it when I use AIM to talk to friends.

Yahoo! - Okay, only use it for two people

Lycos - LOL...didn't even know Lycos had a messenger tool

MSN - Out of all the messenger tools, probably my favorite

ICQ - I use this one the most, works the best when playing online games

Trillian - Allows the consolidation of all three protocols + IRC into one tool. I use this 99.9999% of the time

I got an email on the Lycos messenger. I guess it's new (?) Me thinks I'll look into Trillian or that other that Cir linked to.
