View Full Version : The Rep System Is Dead
$cirisme
July 30th 2004, 11:44 AM
Yep, that's right, after discussion we have decided that the reputation system is forever dead, never to return.
With that, however, I would like to introduce the new grading system, which is much more appropriate for a college campus. It has been a work in progress for several months now and was recently overhauled (again) based on feedback from our contributors and staff. I would like to thank them for their invaluable testing and feedback.
Note that you must be using a Javascript based browser such as Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox to be able to grade posts.
In the subject bar you will note that you have an option menu and a text box. The option menu is for certain preset grades, such as, Informative for posts with lots of information. You also have the option to set a custom grade in each of the following categories:
Substance
This category is for posts with lots of substantive information, such as links, statistics, or just plain old math.
Humour
For those really funny posts.
Insight
For those posts that bring a new degree of insightfullness to a thread.
Uniqueness
For posts that bring something new to the thread, rather than just repeat the same old, same old. Posts that really should be scored as a D or F here would probably be posts that merely repeat the same thing said before, or agreement posts which bring nothing new to the conversation. (such as posts that are only: "Yeah, uhuh, I totally agree.")
Grace
Posts that handle other people with tact, will score high here. Posts that are just vindictive hateful name-calling should be scored low here.
And finally,
Relevance
This scores the post's relevance in relation to this thread. Posts talking about Preterism in a thread on Martha Stewart probably won't do so well in this category.
Please explore these features and let me know what you think. Grade each and every post with fairness based on the criteria for each of the categories here. I hate to end on a threat, but I will anyway: if you do not rate fairly your ability to rate will be eliminated.

here is something interesting,,
choose "custom" from the drop down. you get all of the separate grading boxes, right? Then go back and choose one of the default settings like "funny" - the drop down boxes STAY on the screen and you can see and change what "funny" is grading in the various areas.
Bug? or feature?

OK Crisime,
I have a question . Why do we need/want a grading system for individual posts? Do the average of a person's grades on all his posts count toward something? If he/she consistantly gets poor grades, do they get banned? Or if they get high grades on all their posts do they get rewarded?

I'm using Safari, on a Mac. In both bordered and borderless displays, I get a "submit grade" button at the bottom of the page (submit once for all posts on the page?) and when I select a grade and then click "submit grade" I get a small blank popup window -- and that is all. No message; no change in display; I can go back and change the grade I gave.
If my grade actually posts, am I allowed to grade the same post more than once?

Antira. the grade function (on a specific post) disappears after I've graded someone (on their specific post).

I noticed when you click on someone's grade, you see the average plus any comment. But you don't see what they were graded on. You could have gotten an A for humor but an F for substance..... but how would you know?

It's based on an average of all the grades of each of the categories.
If you did an A on Substance but left NA on the other categories, I suppose it would come up as a C. I will probaly be tweaking the algorithm slightly as time goes on so it's just right.

The funny category is, well... funny. I'd say that that category should only be rated as F if the post was supposed to be funny but wasn't, otherwise it should be C.
A good post can be good without being funny, so I might tweak that category somewhat. I'm not sure. But the above would be the general guidelines for the funny category.

It's based on an average of all the grades of each of the categories.
If you did an A on Substance but left NA on the other categories, I suppose it would come up as a C. I will probaly be tweaking the algorithm slightly as time goes on so it's just right.
Is the raw grade information stored in the database, or the derived average of a custom grade? In other words, will any tweaks to the algorithm be reflected in grades already awarded, or will they just stay the same as they appear now?

Depends on what tweaks are done. Possibly both.
After a month I will take a look at all the graded posts and see how well the current algorithm has worked and tweak it appropriately.

Is anyone other than me using the grading system? :eh:

I use it all the time. Though I guess that's why I only see a few posts graded. :sigh:

Is there any way to know what posts of our own have been graded without looking at every one of them?
