My kid's first name is Stephan (pronounced "Steven", but it's the German spelling.) In his Spanish class the teacher is insisting on using the Spanish version of all the kids' names which in his case is "Estaban." He said it reminded him of the pop singer Gloria Estefan and he didn't like that. I told him if he'd taken German his name would still be the same.

Being from the heart of fly-over country my knowledge of foreign languages is pretty well confined to: vague remembrances of high school French, likely only enough to get me smacked, and a few words and phrases of German that would probably also get me smacked. The only Spanish words I know relate to food and can generally be found on a Taco Bell menu.

So I tell my kid I will help him work on his Spanish vocabulary. It couldn't hurt. I might actually learn something. Now I just gotta learn how to bark orders en Espanol and I'll be set. He can ignore me bilingually!
