View Full Version : Question on Catholic doctrine

My understanding is that mainline evangelicals believe in the following after death sequence.
1. The spirit leaves the body and goes to heaven (or hell).
2. Jesus comes to judge the living and the dead.
3. The spirits in heaven (or hell?) take on glorified PHYSICAL bodies in order to live out eternity.
I was a bit startled when I discovered this, as I was raised Catholic and was never given to understand such a sequence. I thought:
1. You die.
2. Your spirit goes to heaven (or hell) and lives out eternity there in SPIRIT form.
I asked my dad, who is a devout Catholic, what he believed, and he confirmed what I had always thought.
So what's up? Does Catholic doctrine deviate from the idea of a physical rez for humans or is my dad wrong on this one?

Though not a Catholic myself, yet I think there has been a lot of popular nonsense, with pictures of guys in jammies on clouds, that has probably influenced the thinking of Christians. It came as a surprise to me, when I was converted, that the popular view is not the Biblical view. We all talk of "going to heaven", and I think there is not enough examiniation of that idea.
But don't worry, it's not a "damnable" heresy.

I recommend, as always, the the CCC (http://www.scborromeo.org/ccc/p123a12.htm#1033) for any Catholic doctrines.

Thanks for the link! It appears my dad was wrong if items 1052 and 1059 are to be believed.

And they must be believed. Although the CCC is not infallible, it does sum the teachings of the Catholic Church, and to disagree with it puts you in danger of Church discipline.
Glad to be of service,
