Luk 24:51-52 - 'proskuneo'

Luk 24:51-52 - "And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven. And they worshiped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy."

I find this passage interesting as the 'worship' given to Christ in this context is performed after His ascension. This entails that the 'proskuneo' in this particular context denotes an act of religous worship.

As Clarke states:

Luk 24:52 - They worshipped him - Let it be observed that this worship was not given by way of civil respect, for it was after he was parted from them, and carried back into heaven, that they offered it to him; but acts of civil respect are always performed in the presence of the person. They adored him as their God, and were certainly too much enlightened to be capable of any species of idolatry.

Luk 24:52 - Worshipped him (proskune¯santes auton). Here again we have one of Westcott and Hort’s Western non-interpolations that may be genuine or not.

From what I gather, this is an issue of textual matters, so I thought I'd bring it here. What is the evidence for the inclusion of "worshipped him" in the above verse?

Metzger's Textual Commentary states:

"Although a minority of the Committee preferred the shorter reading, regarding the others as interpolations (see the Note following 24:53), the majority considered it more probable that the words proskunhsantes auton had been omitted either accidentally (the eye of the copyist passing from AYTOI...to AYTON) or, perhaps, deliberately (so as to accord better with the shorter reading in ver. 51; see the concluding comments on the previous variant reading)."
