View Full Version : John's XSD Thread

This thread which will be coming soon (at John's leisure of course) will be a study of the use of חסד or XSD (pronounced chesed). Make sure you get those larynx constricted enough to get a good guttural sound :teeth:

The reason that I am interested is that one of my favorite topics and issues in the OT is covenant. And since part of the semantic domain of חסד is covenant loyalty it turns out to be a key word in the unfolding of Salvation-History and so that its negation brings about the covenant curses...Ahh but I digress.

I am starting this in advance to vouch for John's permission to post similar to the "generation" thread which I also enjoy. John please take your time and feel no obligation to start this until you are ready.

Many thanks, GrayPilgrim! :thumb:

Now that the thread has been opened and the word חסד has been so nicely introduced, we can start looking at the word as it occurs in canonical order throughout the Hebrew Bible:

Genesis 19

19 Behold, your servant has found favor (חן / ελεος) in your sight, and you have shown me great kindness (חסד / δικαιοσυνην) in saving my life. But I cannot escape to the hills, lest the disaster overtake me and I die. (ESV)

Here is the definition Holladay gives for חסד, as it is used in the context of Genesis 19:19 :

- 1 obligation to the community in relation to relatives, friends, guests, master and servants, etc.; unity, solidarity, loyalty : . . . חסד exists between . . . guests Gn 19:19. . .

Genesis 20

13 And when God caused me to wander from my father's house, I said to her, 'This is the kindness (חסד / δικαιοσυνην) you must do me: at every place to which we come, say of me, He is my brother.'"

In the context of Genesis 20:13, Holladay gives this definition for חסד

- 1 obligation to the community in relation to relatives, friends, guests, master and servants, etc.; unity, solidarity, loyalty : . . . חסד exists between . . . wife and husband Gn 20:13. . .

Here is a quick note on Hebrew Lexicography. You will note that after some Hebrew letters there is an apostrophe. Generally it looks like this ח’ אתם לא כל כך בסדר. That just means that the word being discussed is abbreviated.

Genesis 21

23 Now therefore swear to me here by God that you will not deal falsely with me or with my descendants (ולניני) or with my posterity (ולנכדי), but as I have dealt kindly (כחסד) with you, so you will deal with me and with the land where you have sojourned."

The Hebrew word rendered “kindly” in Genesis 21:23 is a composite word consisting of a prefixed preposition and the noun חסד, which Holladay defines, in the context of Genesis 21:23, as "show loyalty Gn 21:23".

The LXX has κατα την δικαιοσυνην for כחסד.

Genesis 24

12 And he said, "O LORD, God of my master Abraham, please grant me success today and show steadfast love (חסד / ελεος) to my master Abraham.

14 Let the young woman to whom I shall say, 'Please let down your jar that I may drink,' and who shall say, 'Drink, and I will water your camels'--let her be the one whom you have appointed for your servant Isaac. By this I shall know that you have shown steadfast love (חסד / ελεος) to my master."

The Hebrew word rendered steadfast love in Genesis 24:12 and 14 (חסד) is defined by Holladay as “obligation to the community in relation to relatives, friends, guests, master and servants, etc.; unity, solidarity, loyalty”.

There are two different lexicons being used on this thread. Both are based on the Lexicon in Viteris Testamenti Libros of Ludwig Koehler and Walter Baumgartner. I am using the 1971 edition of an abridgement of the third edition edited by William L. Holladay: A Concise Hebrew and Aramaic Lexicon of the Old Testament. GrayPilgrim is using an unabridged version of the 4th Edition of The Hebrew and Aramaic Lexicon of the Old Testament, by Koehler, Baumbartner, Stamm.

The Introduction to A Concise Hebrew and Aramaic Lexicon of the Old Testament by Holladay (the abridged edition I am using), begins with this:

The advent of the first edition of the Lexicon in Veteris Testamenti Libros of Ludwig Koehler and Walter Baumgartner (1953) was a major event in recent Old Testament studies, gathering together as it did a vast treasure of lexicographical material which had become available up to the time of publication, with renderings into both German and English ; and the Supplementum ad Lexicon in Veteris Testamenti Libros (1958) – which, together with the first edition, was then called the second edition – included both corrections and more recent material from the five intervening years. This lexicon broke with the classic lexicographical tradition of Gesenius, represented in English by A Hebrew and English Lexicon of the Old Testament of Brown, Driver, and Briggs (1907), corrected impression 1952), and took a fresh look at all the lexical evidence. One advantage of the Koehler-Baumgartner Lexicon was immediately evident to everyone who used it: it offered a strictly alphabetical order of entries rather than an arrangement by verbal roots, an innovation (along with the provision of generous cross-references) which saved the user much time. More fundamentally, the lexicon took full advantage of the colossal increase in our knowledge of Semitic linguistics (exemplified by the discovery of Ugaritic). But the increase of our knowledge has continued unabated in the years since, and the need to remedy the apparent defects in the first/second edition and to take account of that steady increase in our knowledge has rendered a revision more and more desirable.

Regrettably, Professor Koehler died in 1956, but Professor Baumgartner then undertook himself the awesome task in which Professors Benedikt Hartmann and E. Y. Kutscher have been collaborating. This revision, called the third edition, is now appearing in print (first fascicle 1967). Up to the present moment approximately two-thirds of the third edition has been completed in manuscript form ; but now comes word of the death of Professor Baumgartner, in January of this year [note: 1970 – JR], at the age of 82. It is lamentable that he could not live to see the completion of this crown of his life-work, upon which he expended so much energy and acuity. We are assured that his collaborators will complete the task, though there will be inevitable delays.

In the planning of this third edition the decision was made, in the interest of saving space, to dispense with renderings in English – thus making the new material unavailable to the student who does not handle German ; and since the English renderings of the first edition were in some instances inadequate or misleading, there has seemed to be a real need for an English edition, in abridged format, of the Koehler-Baumgartner lexical material. The present work is a response to that need.

In Exodus 20:5, there is no Hebrew word corresponding to the word “generation” in the ESV (it is implicit in the Hebrew text; the LXX has γενεα). In 20:6, the Hebrew word rendered steadfast love is חסד.

Deuteronomy 7

6 "For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth. 7 It was not because you were more in number than any other people that the LORD set his love on you and chose you, for you were the fewest of all peoples, 8 but it is because the LORD loves you and is keeping the oath that he swore to your fathers, that the LORD has brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt. 9 Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love (חסד) with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations, 10 and repays to their face those who hate him, by destroying them. He will not be slack with one who hates him. He will repay him to his face. 11 You shall therefore be careful to do the commandment and the statutes and the rules that I command you today.
12 "And because you listen to these rules and keep and do them, the LORD your God will keep with you the covenant and the steadfast love (חסד) that he swore to your fathers. 13 He will love you, bless you, and multiply you. He will also bless the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground, your grain and your wine and your oil, the increase of your herds and the young of your flock, in the land that he swore to your fathers to give you. 14 You shall be blessed above all peoples. There shall not be male or female barren among you or among your livestock. 15 And the LORD will take away from you all sickness, and none of the evil diseases of Egypt, which you knew, will he inflict on you, but he will lay them on all who hate you. 16 And you shall consume all the peoples that the LORD your God will give over to you. Your eye shall not pity them, neither shall you serve their gods, for that would be a snare to you.

Joshua 2

12 Now then, please swear to me by the LORD that, as I have dealt kindly with you, you also will deal kindly with my father's house, and give me a sure sign 13 that you will save alive my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them, and deliver our lives from death." (ESV)

In the ESV version of Joshua 2:12 :

The Hebrew phrase rendered “I have dealt kindly with you” is עשיתי עמכם חסד.

The Hebrew phrase rendered “you also will deal kindly with my father's house” is גם אתם עם בית אבי חסד ונתתם.

In Joshua 2:12, the ESV renders the noun חסד as though it were an adverb: “kindly” – just one of countless examples of the fact that חסד is the most inadequately translated word in the Hebrew Bible, a contributing factor being the fact that the LXX renders חסד with the word ελεος (pity, mercy, kindness).

Ruth and Boaz at the Threshing Floor

1 Then Naomi her mother-in-law said to her, "My daughter, should I not seek rest for you, that it may be well with you? 2 Is not Boaz our relative, with whose young women you were? See, he is winnowing barley tonight at the threshing floor. 3 Wash therefore and anoint yourself, and put on your cloak and go down to the threshing floor, but do not make yourself known to the man until he has finished eating and drinking. 4 But when he lies down, observe the place where he lies. Then go and uncover his feet and lie down, and he will tell you what to do." 5 And she replied, "All that you say I will do." 6 So she went down to the threshing floor and did just as her mother-in-law had commanded her. 7 And when Boaz had eaten and drunk, and his heart was merry, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of grain. Then she came softly and uncovered his feet and lay down. 8 At midnight the man was startled and turned over, and behold, a woman lay at his feet! 9 He said, "Who are you?" And she answered, "I am Ruth, your servant. Spread your wings over your servant, for you are a redeemer." 10 And he said, "May you be blessed by the LORD, my daughter. You have made this last kindness greater than the first in that you have not gone after young men, whether poor or rich. 11 And now, my daughter, do not fear. I will do for you all that you ask, for all my fellow townsmen know that you are a worthy woman. 12 And now it is true that I am a redeemer. Yet there is a redeemer nearer than I. 13 Remain tonight, and in the morning, if he will redeem you, good; let him do it. But if he is not willing to redeem you, then, as the LORD lives, I will redeem you. Lie down until the morning." (ESV)

1 Samuel 15

4 So Saul summoned the people and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand men on foot, and ten thousand men of Judah. 5 And Saul came to the city of Amalek and lay in wait in the valley. 6 Then Saul said to the Kenites, "Go, depart; go down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them. For you showed kindness to all the people of Israel when they came up out of Egypt." So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites. 7 And Saul defeated the Amalekites from Havilah as far as Shur, which is east of Egypt. 8 And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive and devoted to destruction all the people with the edge of the sword. 1 Samuel 20

Jonathan Warns David

1 Then David fled from Naioth in Ramah and came and said before Jonathan, "What have I done? What is my guilt? And what is my sin before your father, that he seeks my life?" 2 And he said to him, "Far from it! You shall not die. Behold, my father does nothing either great or small without disclosing it to me. And why should my father hide this from me? It is not so." 3 But David vowed again, saying, "Your father knows well that I have found favor in your eyes, and he thinks, 'Do not let Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved.' But truly, as the LORD lives and as your soul lives, there is but a step between me and death." 4 Then Jonathan said to David, "Whatever you say, I will do for you." 5 David said to Jonathan, "Behold, tomorrow is the new moon, and I should not fail to sit at table with the king. But let me go, that I may hide myself in the field till the third day at evening. 6 If your father misses me at all, then say, 'David earnestly asked leave of me to run to Bethlehem his city, for there is a yearly sacrifice there for all the clan.' 7 If he says, 'Good!' it will be well with your servant, but if he is angry, then know that harm is determined by him. 8 Therefore deal kindly (תעשה חסד) with your servant, for you have brought your servant into a covenant of the LORD with you. But if there is guilt in me, kill me yourself, for why should you bring me to your father?" 9 And Jonathan said, "Far be it from you! If I knew that it was determined by my father that harm should come to you, would I not tell you?" 10 Then David said to Jonathan, "Who will tell me if your father answers you roughly?" 11 And Jonathan said to David, "Come, let us go out into the field." So they both went out into the field. 12 And Jonathan said to David, "The LORD, the God of Israel, be witness! When I have sounded out my father, about this time tomorrow, or the third day, behold, if he is well disposed toward David, shall I not then send and disclose it to you? 13 But should it please my father to do you harm, the LORD do so to Jonathan and more also if I do not disclose it to you and send you away, that you may go in safety. May the LORD be with you, as he has been with my father. 14 If I am still alive, show me the steadfast love (חסד) of the LORD, that I may not die; 15 and do not cut off your steadfast love (חסד) from my house forever, when the LORD cuts off every one of the enemies of David from the face of the earth." 16 And Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, "May the LORD take vengeance on David's enemies." 17 And Jonathan made David swear again by his love for him, for he loved him as he loved his own soul. (ESV)

In 1 Samuel 20:8 and 14 (x2), the Hebrew word rendered “kindly” (verse 8) and “steadfast love” (verse 14) in the ESV is חסד.

1 And David said, "Is there still anyone left of the house of Saul, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan's sake?" 2 Now there was a servant of the house of Saul whose name was Ziba, and they called him to David. And the king said to him, "Are you Ziba?" And he said, "I am your servant." 3 And the king said, "Is there not still someone of the house of Saul, that I may show the kindness of God to him?" Ziba said to the king, "There is still a son of Jonathan; he is crippled in his feet." 4 The king said to him, "Where is he?" And Ziba said to the king, "He is in the house of Machir the son of Ammiel, at Lo-debar." 5 Then King David sent and brought him from the house of Machir the son of Ammiel, at Lo-debar. 6 And Mephibosheth the son of Jonathan, son of Saul, came to David and fell on his face and paid homage. And David said, "Mephibosheth!" And he answered, "Behold, I am your servant." 7 And David said to him, "Do not fear, for I will show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan, and I will restore to you all the land of Saul your father, and you shall eat at my table always." 19 Then the king said to Ittai the Gittite, "Why do you also go with us? Go back and stay with the king, for you are a foreigner and also an exile from your home. You came only yesterday, and shall I today make you wander about with us, since I go I know not where? Go back and take your brothers with you, and may the LORD show steadfast love and faithfulness to you." 21 But Ittai answered the king, "As the LORD lives, and as my lord the king lives, wherever my lord the king shall be, whether for death or for life, there also will your servant be." 22 And David said to Ittai, "Go then, pass on." So Ittai the Gittite passed on with all his men and all the little ones who were with him. 23 And all the land wept aloud as all the people passed by, and the king crossed the brook Kidron, and all the people passed on toward the wilderness. (ESV)

In 2 Samuel 15:20, the ESV is interesting, given the Hebrew it renders: שוב והשב את אחיך עמך חסד ואמת.

Not that the ESV is an inaccurate rendering of the sense of the Hebrew; however, a wooden literal rendering would be more like this: Go back and take your countrymen with you loyalty and faithfulness.” An interesting translational challenge, and an interesting ESV rendering.

Ah! When we look at the LXX, we see the source of the ESV rendering: epistrefou kai epistreyon touV adelfouV sou meta sou, kai KurioV poihsei meta sou eleoV kai alhqeian.

Should it not be his son? As I have served your father, so I will serve you." (ESV)

2 Samuel 22

26 "With the merciful you show yourself merciful;
with the blameless man you show yourself blameless;
27 with the purified you deal purely,
and with the crooked you make yourself seem tortuous.
28 You save a humble people,
but your eyes are on the haughty to bring them down. (ESV)

In 2 Samuel 22:26, the Hebrew phrase rendered With the merciful you show yourself merciful in the ESV is עם חסיד תתחסד, which consists of a preposition, an adjectival cognate of חסד, and a verbal cognate of חסד.

One is חסיד if he practices חסד.

The Hithpael imperfect of the verb חסד is תתחסד, which means to conduct oneself as חסד (loyal, faithful).

2 Samuel 22

47 "The LORD lives, and blessed be my rock,
and exalted be my God, the rock of my salvation,
48 the God who gave me vengeance
and brought down peoples under me,
49 who brought me out from my enemies;
you exalted me above those who rose against me;
you delivered me from men of violence.
50 "For this I will praise you, O LORD, among the nations,
and sing praises to your name.
51 Great salvation he brings to his king,
and shows steadfast love (חסד) to his anointed,
to David and his offspring forever." (ESV)

1 Kings 2

5 "Moreover, you also know what Joab the son of Zeruiah did to me, how he dealt with the two commanders of the armies of Israel, Abner the son of Ner, and Amasa the son of Jether, whom he killed, avenging in time of peace for blood that had been shed in war, and putting the blood of war on the belt around his waist and on the sandals on his feet. 6 Act therefore according to your wisdom, but do not let his gray head go down to Sheol in peace. 7 But deal loyally (תעשה חכד) with the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite, and let them be among those who eat at your table, for with such loyalty they met me (כי כן קרבו אלי) when I fled from Absalom your brother. (ESV)

That’s an interesting rendering of כי כן קרבו אלי in verse 7, wherein the ESV had led me to expect to find a repetition of חסד.

The LXX has poihseiV eleoV in verse 7a, and hggisan moi in 7b.

5 At Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon during the night in a dream, and God said, "Ask for whatever you want me to give you." 6 Solomon answered, "You have shown great kindness (חסד) to your servant, my father David, because he was faithful to you and righteous and upright in heart. You have continued this great kindness (חסד) to him and have given him a son to sit on his throne this very day. (ESV)

1 Kings 8

Solomon's Prayer of Dedication

22 Then Solomon stood before the altar of the LORD in the presence of all the assembly of Israel and spread out his hands toward heaven, 23 and said, "O LORD, God of Israel, there is no God like you, in heaven above or on earth beneath, keeping covenant and showing steadfast love (שםר הברית והחסד - keeping the covenant and the commitment) to your servants who walk before you with all their heart, 24 who have kept with your servant David my father what you declared to him. You spoke with your mouth, and with your hand have fulfilled it this day. 25 Now therefore, O LORD, God of Israel, keep for your servant David my father what you have promised him, saying, 'You shall not lack a man to sit before me on the throne of Israel, if only your sons pay close attention to their way, to walk before me as you have walked before me.' 26 Now therefore, O God of Israel, let your word be confirmed, which you have spoken to your servant David my father. 1 Kings 20

31 And his servants said to him, "Behold now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings (מלכי חסד loyal kings). Let us put sackcloth around our waists and ropes on our heads and go out to the king of Israel. Perhaps he will spare your life." 32 So they tied sackcloth around their waists and put ropes on their heads and went to the king of Israel and said, "Your servant Ben-hadad says, 'Please, let me live.'" And he said, "Does he still live? He is my brother." [33[/b] Now the men were watching for a sign, and they quickly took it up from him and said, "Yes, your brother Ben-hadad." Then he said, "Go and bring him." Then Ben-hadad came out to him, and he caused him to come up into the chariot. 34 And Ben-hadad said to him, "The cities that my father took from your father I will restore, and you may establish bazaars for yourself in Damascus, as my father did in Samaria." And Ahab said, "I will let you go on these terms." So he made a covenant with him (ויכרת לו ברית) and let him go. (ESV)

1 Chronicles 16

28 Ascribe to the LORD, O clans of the peoples,
ascribe to the LORD glory and strength!
29 Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name;
bring an offering and come before him!
Worship the LORD in the splendor of holiness;
30 tremble before him, all the earth;
yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved.
31 Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice,
and let them say among the nations, "The LORD reigns!"
32 Let the sea roar, and all that fills it;
let the field exult, and everything in it!
33 Then shall the trees of the forest sing for joy
before the LORD, for he comes to judge the earth.
34 Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good;
for his steadfast love endures forever! (ESV)

In 1 Chronicles 16:34, the Hebrew phrase rendered his steadfast love endures forever is לעולם חסדו. The final black letter is a possessive pronoun suffix (“his”).
