Here is a minor thought I had. The US has the worlds largest military. We also are the only country with a truly modern navy, that is, a navy with modern carrier groups, which represent the ultimate in force projection. I, personally, as an American, do not see how there is a differences in us having 9 carrier groups, (as soon as the reagan is built) and 7. I do know, however, that they contribute to the fact that when ever the world demands intervention, we get stuck with the job because we are the only ones that can do it. And I know we are running a deficit. SO, here is my thought. Lets sell two carriers to the EU. They want to be a super power, and that would give them the power to do our peace keeping jobs. With super power comes super responsiblity. I, at least, am willing to give some of it up.

But can we trust the EU?

That would be a concern, especially after the whole UN thing. :poke:

Yeh sure, like, we're gonna invade America? or perhaps we'll sell them on to Pakistan?

You want to sell us a Carrier fleet. You want to sell us a Carrier fleet

Despite the UN scuff, I find it highly unlikely we'd ever fight a war with the Eu. It is alot safer sell then the Chem and bio we sold to Iraq, anyway.

Before world war one most americans could not have imagined fighting a war against Germany either. What we epect and what will happen are two different things. Better to be prepared.

Although in principle I think you have a point. The thing is that US foreign policy has actively been about being the go to person in any given situation. The idea being that if no one else can rise to the occasion we will always have the most power becuase people will have to come to us when they need something.

There's a great article on that in the Atlantic from 2000. I'll see if I can dig it up.

The way I look at it Pilgrim, sooner or later the EU is going to field carriers, so we might as well get something out of the deal. And I think the Eu position to us preww2 is more analogous to France than Germany, although its really not the same situation at all, fortunately.

I wouldn't trust the country solly lives in with anything more dangerous than a pencil. But Germany, sure. The Germans have always been a peaceful people. They would never start a war.

Europe scrapped their carriers during the Cold War, why would they resurect them now?

if Europe wants to be a power in its own right, and it looks to me as if it does, it is going to need them. And they have 1, and some jump carriers already.
