Hello guys, we have decided that our 24 hour edit window was just entirely too long for our activity level. When we started it worked out well but now it is just not reasonable so it has been drastically cut to 45 minutes. The lesson is, make sure you like what you have before hitting "post reply."

That's a pretty drastic difference in window times!

Hey, that's fine with me. Over at CARM you have like two minutes to make changes.

Might i suggest an auto-prune of some sort? Like maybe start with messages over 6 months old?

We never pruned so far and don't wish to with the exception of spam areas. Imagine the paranoid atheist outcry if apologetics got pruned!
We may have to at some point int he future but so far we have had NO pruning of substantive threads.

Don't prune the Xavier Spam Thread! :bawl:

Will you warn us if this is to happen so that we can go back and save some of our favorites?

I miss my edit button!
Is the problem log files overflowing, or something similar? No comprende, shouldn't an edited post just replace the post, and not take up more resources?

Dee Dee,
By Edit time, are you speaking how long the "edit" button remains on a post you made, or how long you have to enter your post into the editor window?
Sometimes I spend a good two hours in the editor window, tweaking my long posts before submitting them.

That's how long from the time you submitted the post that the "edit" button disappears.
In other words, option A.
...Ken is going to be upset. ;-)

How many times do I have to browse past this post and read it as "End Times Revised" :hinn:

don't worry, Lee. if space started becoming a problem they'd likely do what they've always have: have the web host company add more disk space.

We can always encourage the major spammers to contribute to Tweb...oh wait, most of them do.

We hope to never have to prune any substantive areas. The Spam ones are done withotu warning. If there is a particularly good spam thread, ask EM7ADD11 to archive it. Also in the areas that you moderate hit "archive" on the really good threads and that will insure in the case of any future prune it will be spared.

Hey Lee it is not a space issue but a forum management issue. Over the year or so we have been around, periodically an issue dealign with post edits come up - and with our activity level it didn't seem right to have such a large edit window. For instance say you see a post, you save it, take an afternoon to write a response, only to come back and find that the original was revised five hours later. Except for spelling or bad VB coding there really should not be substantive edits to a post after it is posted - having the large edit window was allowing people to post "works in progress" and other issues. This will cause us to choose our points and words more carefully.

That is what we have historically done if the funds are there. But there may come a time when there are other issues, for instance when we moved to a new server this time there was a nail biting period when we worry if the database will transfer properly - it is hard to move massive databases.

Space won't be an issue in eons. The only hdd issue we will have for a good long time is seek times. :teeth:

... say you see a post, you save it, take an afternoon to write a response, only to come back and find that the original was revised five hours later.I have had that happen in other forums. It makes the responses look odd, for sure.

Well, I was terrible at chess, because I would always see the best response after making my move. My oops-cycle time seems to be several hours in posting. Oh well, maybe I'll develop a taste for humble pie...
Blessings,
Lee
